Scouting report

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 8, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at New Orleans

Shane Vereen was the only running back for the Giants last week who was consistently on the field. He was on the field for 43 percent of the team’s snaps, while none of the other backs eclipsed 27 percent. Aside from a nice 39-yard run however, he still didn’t do much. Vereen ended up with four carries and one reception for a total of 62 yards as the Giants advanced over the Cowboys to a 4-3 record on the season.

This week, Vereen has some value against a Saints team that has allowed the third-most yards on the ground so far this year, but he’s still a risky option because of how much the Giants have been splitting touches across the board. He should be considered a low-end RB3 or flex option in most leagues, with a little more value in PPR leagues, but fantasy owners should probably just stay away from the Giants backfield if possible.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Dallas

Shane Vereen has been hard to figure out this year, having good weeks interspersed with bad weeks throughout the season so far. After a nice Week 5 outing, he had only six total yards from scrimmage against the Eagles on Monday night, touching the ball just five times. He was targeted four times in the passing game, making him a continued threat to put up PPR points, but his consistency has been a problem.

This week, Vereen will face a Dallas defense that has given up five touchdowns to opposing rushers this season and is allowing 96.6 yards per game on the ground. Regardless of the matchup, Vereen remains a risky option. He has value, especially in PPR leagues, as a low-end RB2 or Flex option in larger leagues, but he’s risky until we see him string together a couple of good outings.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 6, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Philadelphia

Shane Vereen had a nice game on Sunday night. He had five carries and 24 yards on the ground in the victory over the 49ers, but he added 86 yards and a touchdown on eight receptions. Fantasy owners finally got to see Vereen being active in the passing game, which is why the Giants brought him to New York to begin with.

This week, Vereen faces a Philadelphia defense that has been stout against the run, but vulnerable against the pass so far this year. That puts Vereen in play as an option out of the backfield and makes him the most likely Giants back to put up fantasy points. He’s a risky option though because you never know how the workload in New York will end up, but he’s not a bad RB2 or Flex option in deep leagues, especially PPR formats.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. San Francisco

Shane Vereen really hasn’t made the type of impact in the passing game that was expected of him when he signed with the Giants as a free agent this offseason. He didn’t catch a pass last week and ended up with just 21 yards on five carries as the Giants beat the Buffalo Bills. Vereen has only 12 receptions this season, with all of them coming in the first two games of the year.

This week, Vereen will face a 49ers defense that has struggled this season. He should continue to get about a third of the snaps, giving him some upside against in the matchup. However, his ceiling seems limited, and his value seems relegated to deep league PPR flex territory. In most leagues, he should probably stay on the bench.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Buffalo

Shane Vereen had a disappointing game against Washington last week, finishing with only 23 yards on six carries. He was targeted three times in the passing game, but failed to record a reception. While that shouldn’t happen too often, there are three running backs in New York vying for snaps and touches, making Vereen risky.

This week, he’ll face a tough Buffalo defensive line, but remains an interesting option -- particularly in PPR leagues. Though Vereen should be better than he was last week, he’s a low-end flex/RB2 option in a PPR league at best for this week, because he’s on the field only about a third of the time.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 3, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Washington

Shane Vereen had six carries for 19 yards last week against the Falcons, but his real value is in the passing game. He caught all eight passes thrown his way for 76 yards and leads all running backs through two weeks with 12 receptions this season. Vereen should continue to be used in this capacity, as he’s demonstrated an ability to be an effective weapon catching balls out of the backfield.

This week, Vereen faces a surprisingly good Washington defense, but should still manage to find his numbers. He’s not an elite option, but isn’t a bad RB2 or flex play in most leagues, particularly in PPR formats. Fantasy owners should continue to view him as a viable option from week-to-week.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Atlanta

Shane Vereen had just 14 yards on three carries last week against the Cowboys, but he added four catches for an additional 46 yards. He actually led the team in yards from scrimmage and looks to be heavily-used in the offense on passing downs and in change-of-pace situations.

This week, Vereen will face a Falcons defense that decided not to cover Darren Sproles out of the backfield last week against Philly. This could bode well for Vereen, who should again be active in the passing game. His usage isn’t going to be consistent enough to make him a top fantasy option, but he has some upside in PPR leagues this week as a low-end Flex option.
