NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Dallas

Shane Vereen was brought in to catch passes this year. After catching 99 balls over the past season and a half in New England, Vereen will get every chance to continue to be productive in the passing game as a New York Giant.

In Week 1, Vereen will face a Cowboys defense that played surprisingly very well a year ago, but has a different roster than the one they ended last season with (including the injury to Orlando Scandrick, the drafting of Randy Gregory and the suspension of Rolando McClain). Because Vereen is in a time share with Rashad Jennings this season, we recommend a cautious approach to him, and have him ranked just outside our top 30 backs. He has a little extra value in a PPR league, but should be considered a low end RB2/RB3 option at best while we see what the Giants offense is going to look like with both running backs healthy.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Shane Vereen is coming off another up and down statistical season where he showed versatility and talent in a crowded New England backfield. Vereen ended up fifth in the NFL among running backs with 52 receptions on the year, but only managed 391 yards rushing, scoring a total of five times. He goes to a Giants team that is looking for more pop out of the backfield.

Fantasy Upside
Vereen has the versatility the Giants are looking for, and they are no strangers to taking a committee approach at the running back position. Vereen should at the very least eat into the 62 receptions that New York ball carriers had a year ago, and will likely improve on that number in Ben McAdoo’s west coast offense. Vereen will be vying for touches, but he’s a talented back, leaving a notoriously fickle coach in regard to consistency in touches, for a team badly in need of his services. He has a chance for a career year if he can distinguish himself among the pack.

Fantasy Downside
The fact that Andre Williams and Rashad Jennings are also in the backfield is what gives fantasy owners pause when considering Vereen as a top back. He’s never been the most consistent fantasy producer anyway, and he’ll likely continue to share touches with these other two players. Jennings is a versatile player as well, which will put the onus on Vereen to beat him out on passing downs, critical to fantasy success for the fifth year player out of Cal.

Bottom Line
Vereen is younger and more talented than Jennings, and he’s far more versatile than the bruising Williams, so he should win out sooner rather than later in New York and find ways to get a consistent amount of touches. However, with the crowded backfield, fantasy owners should consider him a RB3 type of prospect with upside in a PPR league.

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 20, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 20 vs Colts
Last week the Patriots RB game-planned to abandon the run nearly entirely, and focus on attacking the Ravens weak secondary, rather than their strong defensive front. Given that the Patriots only had a combined 7-14 line from their RBs on the day, Vereen's 1-6 line on the ground is actually (and oddly) respectable. He also added 4-39 in the passing game. Vereen's usage hasn't been that of someone you'd feel comfortable starting in standard scoring leagues, for several games in a row now. His passing game work and PPR bonuses are what owners mostly hope for and rely on, at this point. That said, he does enjoy the only plus rushing matchup this weekend, via aFPA. We place him in the same conversation this weekend as we did throughout most the season, as a "RB2."

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 19, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 19 vs Ravens
Vereen's lackluster finish to the season, combined with an opponent surrendering the 3rd fewest aFPA to opposing RBs, leads us to be wary of him this weekend. With eight teams playing this weekend, we rank Vereen as RB9. His PPR bump puts him just above that range, making him a borderline start at best.

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs Bills
In Week 16, Vereen put up a 6-38 line, adding 1-12 in the air, in a continued week of middling production, and more importantly, middling usage. In Weeks 13 & 14, Vereen saw four touches each game. In Weeks 15 & 16, Vereen saw seven touches each game. This week, with Vereen a little dinged up and with the Patriots already having clinched the #1 seed, it's hard to rely on Vereen. We rank him as RB32, and RB27 in PPR. Play him at your own risk.

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Jets
A goal-line TD saved Vereen's Week 15 fantasy day, on his way to a 6-5-1 & 1-12 line. His six carries and lone reception bring his average touches per game all the way up FIVE per game, over the last three weeks. It may not be a sample size to trust, but it's equally hard to trust Vereen in your lineups, at this point. With the tough aFPA matchup against the Jets and his low usage of late, we rank Vereen only as a fringe low-end RB3 or mid-RB4, depending on your league size. His expected PPR bump puts him in the mid to high end RB3 conversation.

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs Miami
We know Vereen's usage and performances can ebb and flow as the season progresses, and as game flow indicates. However, coming off only eight touches total over the last two weeks, we're a little concerned. Owners with better options may want to consider leaving Vereen on your bench this weekend. We rank him as RB38, with a PPR bump only to RB33.
