Scouting report

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 14, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Chargers
Despite playing his normal compliment of snaps, over 50% in Week 13, Vereen saw only three carries and two targets, turning in a 3-6 and 1-26 line. Owners hopeful of a Week 14 rebound need to be wary of the tough matchup, as the Chargers are in the top 10 of aFPA for RBs. Vereen is an often steady producer in PPR leagues, but we're a little more down on him this week than usual. He usually gets fringe RB2 consideration in our ranks, but we have him as a RB3/4 this week, with his normal PPR bump only up to the RB3 range.

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 13, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Green Bay

Vereen put up a quintessential Vereen-line in Week 12, rushing for an 8-12 line in a tough matchup, while adding 8-48 in the passing game.

In Week 13, we give Vereen his usual ranking. He's a mid-high end RB3 in standard, and a low-end RB2 in PPR.

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 12, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs Detroit
In Week 11 Vereen saw his typical passing game usage, putting up a 4-59 line in the air. His rushing load, however, took a backseat to fellow RB Jonas Gray who rushed for a 199-4 line on 38 touches. Vereen added just one carry for 18 yards. Gray won't rush 38 times every game, though, and we project a return to normalcy for Vereen in Week 12. We rank him as a mid-range RB3 in standard, with his usual PPR bump to the RB2 conversation.

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 11, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at IND

Vereen put up another solid line in Week 9 with his 5-38-1 line in the passing game, and another 11-29 on the ground. This makes for the fourth game of the 2014 season Vereen has more yards in the passing game than on the ground. He has also three receiving TDs on the year, to only one rushing TD.

In a game that figures to feature two passing games heavily, we have Vereen ranked as a high-end RB2, even in standard formats. Make sure he's going in your lineups this weekend.

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 9, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs Denver
After a career high usage in Week 7, Vereen returned back to earth this week. He saw a much saner 44% of snaps, and enjoyed the floor of his typical usage in this blowout, with only five carries and three receptions. Ultimately a 5-22 & 3-23 line won't excite owners, but it's nice to see players put up a few points even in bad outings. Given the nature and game flow of this one, Vereen's down fantasy numbers aren't unexpected.

Vereen should play a bigger role this week than last, but he does have a tough matchup, as Denver offers one of the aFPA matchups for RBs. We rank him as we often do in the low-end RB2 territory, with a modest PPR bump.

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 8, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs CHI
Faithful Vereen owners were richly rewarded in Week 7, as Vereen put up his best fantasy outing of 2014. His role in the passing game brought a studly 5-57-2, and he added another 11-43 on the ground. In the Patriots first game without Stevan Ridley, they leaned heavily on Vereen as he played over 80% of the team's snaps, a career high. His 11 rushing attempts were also a bump from the 5-9 carries he's seen every other week this season.

We're projecting the Patriots to once again lean heavily on Vereen in Week 8, while they work to bring potential Jonas Gray, Ridley's potential replacement, up to speed. We have Vereen ranked as a low end RB1 or high end RB2 this weekend, depending on your scoring format and league size. If you own Vereen, he should be in your lineups this weekend.

NE RB Shane Vereen - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs New York Jets
Vereen struggled in Week 6 against a Buffalo defense which ranks as a bottom three aFPA matchup for RBs. Vereen carried the ball a season low five times, and added only one reception, totaling only 7 yards on the day. With Stevan Ridley likely done for the year, the Patriots need Vereen to have a nice bounce back game in Week 7.

While the Jets are tough against the run, they are not nearly as hard on fantasy RBs as Buffalo. We rank Vereen as RB22 in both standard and PPR formats. Hopefully he can find some running room, and get more involved in the passing game again.
