Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith, who at some point during the weekend suffered a foot infection, will not play Sunday. HC Ron Rivera said if this were the regular season, Smith would officially be ruled as "out."

Smith was still on crutches Friday after first being seen on them Wednesday after a doctor's visit. He's been on antibiotics and the team is monitoring the swelling.

Rams WR Steve Smith had had long looks with the first team offense and though Brandon Gibson returned to work on Monday, he still got some reps with the first and second unit. Through two preseason games, Smith has seemed to find a bit of a groove with quarterback Sam Bradford as the pair has connected for three catches for 24 yards.

Fantasy Impact: 

There will be value to be found in the Rams passing game, it's just a matter of targeting the right guys. We believe Danny Amendola has a good chance to lead the team in receptions, but the starting spots on the outside are wide open. Steve Smith and Brian Quick would appear to be the favorites, but there are other guys in the mix.

Rams WR Brain Quick for the second day in a row had an outstanding practice session, per QB Sam Bradford the "light blub came on" today for him.

Fantasy Impact: 

Quick will still have some catching up to do as Danny Amendola and Steve Smith seem to be the starters with Brandon Gibson also looking good. Quick is nothing more than a flier option at this point but is likely to go undrafted. WRs are always popping up on the waiver wire as the season goes on, so it may not be long until Quick becomes a fantasy option.

Rams rookie WR Brian Quick, the first pick of the 2nd round, was mostly jammed at the line. He couldn't handle the Colts' aggressive press coverage. Welcome to the NFL.

From what I could see, Quick didn't seem to maintain speed going into, or coming out of, his breaks. This game is going to move a lot faster than what Quick saw at Appy State.

He'll need time to adjust. The question is, will he be able to adjust -- and if so, how soon?

There's a lot of pressure on Quick. Snead and the Rams' people hyped him up after making him a somewhat surprising pick. And when you hype a kid, fans and media immediately expect more from him. So if Quick gets off to a slow start in his rookie season, you'll see the Donnie Avery comparisons thrown at him right away.

Is it fair? No. But it is the NFL ... elsewhere: it looks like Austin Pettis, in his second season, has learned how to escape press coverage. He looked good ... if he stays healthy, Steve Smith should be able to help. Might turn out to be a smart signing. But again, it's only preseason.
