WAS WR Terry McLaurin - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Terry McLaurin hasn't quite been the Scary Terry we've seen in the past as Washington is spreading the ball out more between him, Curtis Samuel, and Jahan Dotson. McLaurin has still been pretty productive though as has finishes of 2-58-1 and 4-75-0. And even with more threats, McLaurin saw eight targets in Week 2, the second-most on the team. This week he draws a tough matchup against Darius Slay and the Eagles The matchup is a real concern, but it shouldn't be enough to make you terrified to start McLaurin. He should still be viewed as a mid-tier WR2 option.

Week 2 at Detroit Lions

Terry McLaurin only had two receptions in Week 1. One was a nine yard catch and the other was a 49-yard touchdown. Scary Terry is no longer the only receiver of value in this Washington offense as Curtis Samuel and Jahan Dotson each had strong games as well. On one hand, it means teams won't be as focused on McLaurin every game. On the other, it means fewer touches. Still, McLaurin is an elite talent, and we could see a different Commanders receiver have a big game on varying weeks. McLaurin has a good chance at a productive game in Week 2 as he gets a favorable matchup vs. the Lions. McLaurin is a low-end WR1 play against Detroit.

Week 1 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Terry McLaurin has played with eight different quarterbacks in three years, and Carson Wentz will make it nine. Despite the carousel of QBs, McLaurin has continued to produce at a high level in Washington. And despite Wentz's flaws, he's one of the better quarterbacks to throw passes to McLaurin. We'll see just how good this pairing is in Week 1 in a solid matchup vs. the Jaguars. McLaurin should be viewed as a low-end WR1 or a strong WR2 play to start the season.

2022 Fantasy Upside
He may not be Patrick Mahomes, but the arrival of Carson Wentz means Terry McLaurin gets an upgrade at the quarterback position. McLaurin has been able to make the best out of a bad situation, averaging 1,030 yards per season in his first three years. Not only did McLaurin have to overcome bad quarterback play, but he was also the only real receiving threat in Washington. Last season, the team’s second-leading wide receiver was Adam Humphries with 383 yards. In fact, only two other receivers on the team even topped 200 receiving yards. This year, Washington added 1st-round rookie Jahan Dotson, and Curtis Samuel should be healthy. Both receivers should be able to take some heat off McLaurin as he improves his efficiency.

2022 Fantasy Downside
McLaurin took a step back in 2021, averaging fewer receptions (1.3 less) and fewer receiving yards per game (12.6 less). He also saw a significant drop in his catch percentage, falling to 59.2%, which ranked 169th out of eligible receivers last year. If that inefficiency continues, and McLaurin sees a loss of targets with the arrival of Dotson and return of Samuel, that could spell a significant decrease in production for McLaurin. And while Wentz may be an improvement at quarterback, he’s still not an elite option who is going to take full advantage of McLaurin’s abilities.

2022 Bottom Line
McLaurin is a fairly safe bet to top 1,000 yards again this year. While McLaurin’s catch percentage was bad last year, we can likely attribute that more towards the quarterback play rather than McLaurin’s own abilities. Wentz should be able to get McLaurin back on track and more on pace towards what the wide receiver was able to accomplish in 2020. The team and system certainly hurt McLaurin’s overall value, but he’s still an extremely talented player. He should be viewed around the WR15 range heading into 2022.

WAS WR Terry McLaurin - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Terry McLaurin finished 3-40 on six targets last week as Washington's offense struggled to move the ball against the Cowboys. Interestingly enough, McLaurin still played on 92% of the offensive snaps last week despite the blowout, and despite the fact Washington pulled starters Taylor Heinicke and Antonio Gibson. It's been a frustrating year for McLaurin who is averaging 1.4 receptions and 14.6 yards less per game compared to last year. He hasn't been terrible, but most of his production has been carried by four big games. In fact, McLaurin has only scored touchdowns this season in games where he's finished with 100 receiving yards or more (4). And outside of those four games, he's only finished with at least five receptions one other time. Because of this, he should be viewed more as a WR3 heading into his Week 17 matchup vs. the Eagles. When he played Philly just a few weeks ago, he finished 2-51 on four targets, although that was with a quarterback the team just signed that week.

WAS WR Terry McLaurin - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Dallas Cowboys

Terry McLaurin only had two catches last week (four targets), but still managed to finish with 51 yards. The poor performance isn't too surprising considering Washington started a QB they just signed less than a week ago. But it was another tough outing for McLaurin, who is averaging about a reception and 13 yards less per game compared to last year. Heading into Week 16, there's some good and bad news for McLaurin. The good news is Taylor Heinicke returns at QB this week. The bad news is it's a tough matchup against the Cowboys. Dallas held McLaurin to 0 receptions for the first time in his career a few weeks ago, although McLaurin did leave midway through the third quarter due to injury. McLaurin should be viewed as a WR2 play heading into Week 16.

WAS WR Terry McLaurin - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Philadelphia Eagles

Terry McLaurin saw three targets last week before exiting in the third quarter with zero receptions. It's the first time in his career McLaurin has been held without a catch. He also left due to a concussion, and that injury will be worth monitoring ahead of Week 15. McLaurin didn't participate in practice Wednesday but got in a limited session on Thursday. If he does play, he enters a messy situation. Washington's top two quarterbacks are on the COVID/Reserve list, which means there's a chance Kyle Shurmur ends up starting. Combine that with the fact Philadelphia has given up the second-fewest average fantasy points to receivers and you've got a bad situation. McLaurin is a talented player, but QB issues and a bad matchup are a real concern this week. He should be viewed more in the WR3 range in Week 15, assuming he's out of the concussion protocol.
