Fantasy Upside
Scary Terry McLaurin improved from his stellar rookie season, setting career highs in targets (134), receptions (87) and yards (1,118). As 4for4’s John Paulsen notes, since 2000, McLaurin is one of 12 receivers to average at least 70 yards receiving and gain 2,000+ total yards in his first two seasons. And last season he had high production despite having four different quarterbacks under center. Washington should be more consistent, and improved, in that area after adding Ryan Fitzpatrick in free agency. Fitzpatrick’s long-ball should pair well with McLaurin’s skillset, leading to an even better season in his third year in the NFL.
Fantasy Downside
While McLaurin improved in a lot of areas last year, he took a big hit in the touchdown department as he only finished with four scores. McLaurin is also no longer the only star at receiver in Washington after the team signed Curtis Samuel and drafted Dyami Brown in the third round. Washington also brought back Logan Thomas. With a more talented receiving corps, it’s hard to see McLaurin matching his 134 targets from a year ago.
2021 Bottom Line
While McLaurin likely will see fewer targets than a year ago, he should see higher quality targets in 2021. McLaurin ranked 126th out of eligible receivers in catch percentage a year ago. An improved quarterback, and better receivers around him to take the pressure off should help McLaurin improve on that number. We like McLaurin as a strong WR1 this year, and see him finishing as a top 10 receiver in fantasy.
