DET RB Theo Riddick - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Playing in 14 games last year with the Lions, Theo Riddick turned 101 touches into 555 total yards. It was the fourth straight season he accumulated at least 50 receptions. Even with his new team, whether he lines up in the backfield or as a WR, Riddick’s quickness creates a matchup nightmare for defensive coordinators.

Fantasy Downside
For the first time in his six NFL seasons, Riddick failed to find the end zone in ‘18. Last year he had double-digit touches in a game just three times and his 6.3 yards per reception were a career low. With Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman doing most of the work for the Broncos in the ground game, Riddick’s productivity will again come in the passing game.

Bottom Line
After injuring a shoulder in his first preseason game with Denver, Riddick won't be on the field until late September at the earliest. He remains mostly a PPR fantasy option, as he was a nice option for Matthew Stafford on third down, and should be a favorite of Joe Flacco's on passing downs as well. It will be interesting to see if his role remains the same with the Broncos, but Riddick had just 40 rushing attempts last season - so don’t expect much from him on the ground. He should only be drafted in PPR leagues or as a late-round flier in deep leagues.

DET RB Theo Riddick - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Green Bay Packers

On seven touches last week in the loss to the Vikings, Theo Riddick totaled only five yards. The Lions offense continues to struggle, with Riddick not doing much all season as a rusher or pass catcher. He has not scored all season and totaled just 22 yards on five touches in the win versus the Packers in October. There is no reason for him to be in your starting lineup on Sunday.

DET RB Theo Riddick - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Minnesota Vikings

At Buffalo last Sunday Theo Riddick led the Lions with 47 rushing yards on eight carries. He also caught two passes for nine yards in the loss. With Kerryon Johnson battling a knee injury, Detroit has used a RBBC approach with Riddick, LeGarrette Blount and Zach Zenner. At Minnesota in November Riddick led the team’s aerial attack with seven receptions for 36 yards and will likely have better results in the passing game again. Even though Zenner has scored in two straight none of the backs is worthy of a fantasy start.

DET RB Theo Riddick - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Buffalo Bills

In the win over the Cardinals last week, Theo Riddick ran for 28 yards on six rushes and caught four passes for a team-high 30 yards. While the 58 total yards doesn’t sound too impressive, it accounted for over a fourth of the Lions total offense. With Matthew Stafford limited in pass-catching options, Riddick’s fantasy value will remain in PPR leagues. Detroit has a tough matchup on Sunday versus the No. 1 overall defense.

DET RB Theo Riddick - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Arizona Cardinals

With Kerryon Johnson out once more with a knee injury in the loss to the Rams last Sunday, Theo Riddick registered a season-high eight rushes for 32 yards and caught three passes for 26 additional yards. Riddick has posted back-to-back 50-yard games and has a good chance to extend that streak if Johnson is out again versus a suspect Arizona defense. However, if the rookie returns, Riddick’s value will remain as a pass catcher and should only receive PPR considerations.

DET RB Theo Riddick - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Splitting playing time with LeGarrette Blount due to Kerryon Johnson being injured versus the Bears on Thanksgiving Day, Theo Riddick received just two carries for 12 yards. He remained a weapon in the passing game, however, catching a team-leading seven passes for 48 yards. Johnson should be back versus the Rams, so Riddick’s main fantasy value continues to be in PPR leagues only.

DET RB Theo Riddick - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Chicago Bears

With Kerryon Johnson nursing a knee injury in the second half of the win over the Panthers last Sunday, Theo Riddick was targeted seven times in the passing game, leading to five grabs for 30 yards. The Lions were ahead for much of the contest, so Riddick’s receiving skills weren’t needed as much. He caught six passes for 60 yards in the loss to Chicago in Week 10. But, even though Johnson is out on Thanksgiving, Riddick is no more than a flex play versus the No. 3 overall defense.
