JAX RB Travis Etienne - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Atlanta Falcons (London)

Travis Etienne was busy against the Texans, carrying the ball 19 times for 88 scoreless yards while also catching four of his five targets for another 50 yards. His deeds earned him 15.8 Half PPR points, good for RB9 last week. Etienne is the RB16 in fantasy points per game so far in 2023.

The Falcons have not been an easy out for running backs this season, and currently rank eighth in aFPA to the position in 2023. Etienne is handling a healthy workload in the misfiring Jaguars offense, and it is for this season that he should continue to be viewed as an RB1 in Week 4.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Houston Texans

Travis Etienne's Week 2 stat line does not make for pretty reading. His 13 rush attempts against the Chiefs brought a middling 46 yards, while his two receptions brought forth another two. Etienne's 45 yards did not include any touchdowns and led to his only collecting 5.2 Half PPR points, on his way to RB39 numbers.

Etienne managers shouldn't be too worried, as a bounceback game is straight up on the docket against the Texans. This is by far the best running back matchup on the Week 3 slate, and Etienne projects as an upper-level RB1 option this week.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs Kansas City Chiefs

Travis Etienne got his season off to a solid start against the Colts in Week 1. Etienne commanded a 51% share of the team's rushing attempts, carrying the ball 18 times for 77 yards and a touchdown. He also saw five targets, good for a 15% share, which he converted into five receptions for 27 yards. Etienne amassed 18.9 Half-PPR points and finished as the RB6 last week.

The Chiefs are a fairly middling proposition for fantasy running backs this week and as the top dog in the Jaguars backfield, Etienne should get plenty of opportunities to rack up fantasy points. Still, the likelihood of the game developing into an air show caps his overall impact, making him a low-end RB1 projection in Week 2.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Indianapolis Colts

After missing his entire rookie season due to injury, Travis Etienne was able to become a productive member of the Jags offense in 2022. He rushed for 1,125 yards and five touchdowns, adding another 316 yards on 35 receptions. Etienne only averaged 2.1 receptions per game, and this put something of a ceiling on his fantasy output. He averaged 11.0 Half-PPR points per game and finished as the RB17 overall.

Etienne has a fairly soft start to his 2023 season with a trip to the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts were 25th in aFPA to running backs last season. With the Jaguars the favorites in this one, Etienne should see enough work to make him a trustworthy RB2 option.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
As Field Level Media reminded readers, Travis Etienne's 2021 pre-season Lisfranc injury was an ill-timed but temporary obstacle on his way to a star turn in the NFL. (If anything, Etienne got to sit out that whole embarrassing Urban Meyer year in North Florida.) Etienne eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in his first season of action and did enough to convince the Jaguars to move on from James Robinson, who was competing for time in the backfield. If you aren't worried about rookie Tank Bigsby, holdover JaMycal Hasty or new signing D'Ernest Johnson working into the backfield rotation, the big-play ability Etienne flashed at Clemson and the built-in chemistry with former college teammate Trevor Lawrence are huge positives. Etienne's ceiling remains high.

Fantasy Downside
Etienne's season was very boom or bust. He cracked 100 yards in a game five times. He also failed to crack 40 yards five times while tying for the NFL lead with four 40-yard-plus gains (Justin Fields, Derrick Henry). He was given a pretty hefty workload in the red zone, with 40 touches, but he had five total touchdowns, four of which came in one three-week span.

2023 Bottom Line
While Etienne is a great candidate for positive TD regression in Jacksonville's ascending offense, it's still fair to question his receiving numbers and overall role. As 4for4's John Paulsen, "It’s tough to project a big second-year jump for a player who was a fantasy RB2 last season and faces more touch competition in year two." His RB20 ranking and third round ADP appear to take all that into account.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Houston Texans

It was tough sledding for Travis Etienne against the Jets in Week 16. He saw 22 carries, but could only muster 83 yards on the ground. Etienne caught all three of his targets for 29 yards, giving him 20+ receiving yards in back-to-back games. Etienne managed 12.7 Half PPR points, good for RB15 on the week.

Etienne could not ask for a much better matchup for himself and his fantasy managers in Week 17. The Texans rank 29th in aFPA to running backs, allowing a league-high 2,104 rushing yards to tailbacks this season. Assuming he sees a normal workload, Etienne should be among the top scorers in the running back position this week.

JAX RB Travis Etienne - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at New York Jets

Travis Etienne had his best game for quite some time against the Cowboys in Week 15. He rushed 19 times for 103 yards, his fourth 100-yard game of the season and his first since Week 9. Etienne also caught two passes for another 24 yards on his way to 11.7 Half-PPR points, good for RB18 in that format.

Etienne could be in for a tough night from a fantasy point of view against the Jets in Week 16. Robert Saleh's boys rank sixth in aFPA to running backs this season and have given up the tenth-fewest rushing yards to tailbacks. He's a volume-driven RB2 this week.
