Sean Payton threw a lot of looks at the 49ers' 3-4 scheme, using 10 different personnel packages. The Saints spent more time than usual in their base set with two receivers, a tight end, running back and fullback. They also used multiple-tight end sets on 20 snaps. Once Bush went down, Pierre Thomas manned his spot in the Saints' "posse" package -- three receivers, one tight end and one back - which they use in their no-huddle and two-minute drill.

Here's the breakdown of the reps at each skill position: WR - Henderson 52; Colston 52; Moore 28; Meachem 14.. TE - Shockey 53; David Thomas 27; Graham 1; Tennant 1; Brown 1. FB - Heath Evans 22; D. Thomas 3. RB - Pierre Thomas 41; R. Bush 25

The Patriots reached back into their past yesterday and re-signed RB Patrick Pass. Pass played in New England from 2000 to 2006 and won three Super Bowl rings as a versatile reserve back and special teams contributor. The 5-foot-10-inch, 217-pound Pass joins a crowded backfield that includes Laurence Maroney, Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk, Sammy Morris, Benjarvus Green-ellis, and Eric Kettani. He gives the team a veteran player capable of playing FB, something it lacked without Heath Evans, who moved on to New Orleans.The 31-year-old Pass was out of football last season. He left the Patriots following the 2006 season, which he ended on injured reserve with a hamstring ailment, and signed with the Texans, who cut him coming out of training camp. He then hooked on with the Giants in November 2007, but was released after playing in one game.

Saints FB Heath Evans, a 30-year-old free agent from NE, who brings more versatility to the offense. Evans has served as a fill-in TB with the Patriots, in addition to being more of a receiving threat and a special teams specialist. But the Saints insist that they also expect him to be an upgrade as a blocking back, which will be his main duty. Although Evans may see some work as a short-yardage runner in certain situations, the Saints didn't specifically bring him in to fill that void in their offense. FB Darian Barnes is a journeyman veteran who has bounced around with eight teams in his career. He joined the Saints late last season but played sparingly, mostly on special teams. FB Olaniyi SobomehinSobomehin, an athletic undrafted rookie, showed promise last year in training camp and on the practice squad. But he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in his NFL debut against SF after catching two passes for 8 yards.The Saints have gone with just one FB on their roster in the past, but they could keep two, especially if one of the backups stands out on special teams.
