MIN TE Chris Herndon - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Cincinnati Bengals

Chris Herndon was a late addition to the Vikings, as the team traded for him on August 31st, shortly after starting tight end Irv Smith Jr. suffered a torn meniscus that ended his season. Herndon projects to take over as the top pass-catcher at tight end, but his late arrival could lead to a lower snap count in Week 1. We’re likely to see the Vikings' targets narrowly distributed between Justin Jefferson, Adam Thielen, and Dalvin Cook, especially in the early stages of the season.

Herndon was a major disappointment with the Jets last season, but let’s not forget that he had a promising rookie year, catching 39-of-56 targets for 502 yards and four touchdowns. This is a player who can make an impact at a scarce tight end position later in the year. While the Bengals ranked 25th in aFPA to tight ends last year, this isn’t the spot to use Herndon, as he still needs to get acclimated to the offense. Monitor his usage here, but keep him on your bench in deeper leagues while keeping an eye on him while he’s on the waiver wire in shallower formats.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Miami
We are still looking for the Chris Herndon we saw his rookie season, but he hasn't shown up yet. Last week, he only was targeted three times which produced two receptions for 24 yards. He still has zero touchdowns, but there is still hope considering he is getting snaps and there aren't many other options in the Jets offense.

The matchup this week is tough as Miami is eighth in aFPA to tight ends. We will continue to keep Herndon on the radar, but he should be a bench player for Week 6 as a low-end TE2.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Arizona
The P word keeps getting mentioned with Chris Herndon. However, that potential hasn't turned into anything yet. After catching six passes in the opener, he has only five total since then. Maybe the change at quarterback will help Herndon's numbers. Joe Flacco loved his tight ends in Baltimore.

Herndon faces the Cardinals who are 18th in aFPA to tight ends. With no advantage, either way, we will acknowledge that the Jets offense will still probably be bad and Herndon won't benefit from any changes this season. Keep him on the bench for Week 5.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Denver
Chris Herndon had averaged over five targets a game, but his production has been minimal. Most of this stems from the fact the Jets offense is horrible. However, he does have the most potential of the New York skill players if they try to get him the ball more.

Herndon faces Denver who is 15th in aFPA to tight ends. So, the neutral matchup won't hurt Herndon's prospects. However, we will go back to bad overall offense. This hurts all the Jets players and they will continue to rank low in fantasy rankings. Keep Herndon on the bench for Week 4. He doesn't even rate a TE2 for Thursday.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Indianapolis
After a good outing in Week 1, Chris Herndon disappeared last Sunday with only one catch for five yards. It will be an up and down season for Herndon who has potential because the Jets' offense is so bad.

Herndon faces the Colts who are 13th in aFPA to tight ends. It's going to be interesting to see what direction the Jets offense heads. Hendon can be a valuable asset, but it won't be conisistent. Keep him on the bench for Week 3 as a low-end TE2 in all formats.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs San Francisco
Chris Herndon had a nice return for the Jets with seven targets and six receptions for 37 yards. After missing most of last season, it was good to see Herndon back on the field. With LeVeon Bell on IR, Herndon becomes even more important and might be the second best offensive weapon for New York.

The Jets play the Niners who are third in aFPA to tight ends. Even with the tough matchup, Herndon does have some value. He ranks a TE2 for Week 2 and will probably stay in that range for now. But big games could be possible unless the Jets offense keeps getting in its own way.

NYJ TE Chris Herndon - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Buffalo
Chris Herndon had a great rookie season in 2018, but only played part of one game last season. There was a buzz in drafts as he was thought to be a sleeper and that could be accurate. The biggest thing he is fighting is the overall Jets offense struggles.

Herndon will face the Bills who were 5th in aFPA to tight ends in 2019. There aren't any high expectations for the Jets in this matchup so the same applies to Herndon.

Keep him on the bench for Week 1 as he ranks a TE2 against Buffalo. He will have his moments in 2020, but not in the opener.
