CAR RB Chuba Hubbard - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Miami Dolphins

Chuba Hubbard actually slightly out-snapped Miles Sanders last week in a blowout loss to the Lions. He wasn’t particularly productive, however, as he was held to just 35 yards on nine carries and one reception. Hubbard has a role in this offense, but his output is too volatile in his part-time position to make him worth starting in most fantasy leagues. Even in a nice matchup against a Dolphins defense that ranks 26th in aFPA to opposing running backs, it’s too risky to put him in lineups. Sit him, though he’s worth a stash in deeper leagues in case the nagging injury Sanders is dealing with becomes a more debilitating one.

Update: With Miles Sanders out, consider Hubbard a fringe-RB2 option, set for a full workload.

CAR RB Chuba Hubbard - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Detroit Lions

Chuba Hubbard tied Miles Sanders with 16 touches last week in a loss to the Vikings, and he out-snapped Sanders 54% to 43%. Time will tell how much game script and Sanders’ groin injury had to do with that, but it’s worth noting. Hubbard ended up with 53 yards on 14 carries and a pair of receptions. It was his first time with double-digit touches since Week 1.

This week, Hubbard has a tough matchup against the Lions, who rank first in aFPA to opposing running backs. In a timeshare against a formidable defense, it’s too risky to trust Hubbard in lineups this week. That said, roster him in deeper formats just in case his role continues to grow. The Panthers are still searching for an identity on offense.

CAR RB Chuba Hubbard - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Chuba Hubbard had 18 touches through his first two games this season, but then had only three last week in a loss to the Colts. Hubbard remains a potential RB2 option in the event of a Miles Sanders injury, but for now, his workload isn’t consistent enough to warrant fantasy consideration. Stash him if you have roster space, but make sure he’s not in your lineup, even in a nice matchup with the Vikings this week.

CAR RB Chuba Hubbard - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Seattle Seahawks

Chuba Hubbard is second on the depth chart behind Miles Sanders, but he’s more than a pure backup. Hubbard is seeing 36% of the team’s offensive snaps so far this season and has 18 touches through two games. Last week, Hubbard had only two carries for 16 yards, but he caught all five of his targets for 34 receiving yards.

This week, Hubbard gets a great matchup against a vulnerable Seahawks defense that has already allowed four touchdowns to opposing running backs. The Panthers are struggling offensively, but with Miles Sanders nursing a pectoral injury and a great matchup on the slate, Hubbard has some deep-league, RB3 upside. If Sanders were to miss the contest, Hubbard would enter RB2 territory.

CAR RB Chuba Hubbard - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New Orleans Saints

Chuba Hubbard looked explosive as the change-of-pace back behind free agent acquisition Miles Sanders in Week 1. He averaged an impressive 6.7 yards per carry on nine rush attempts and added a pair of receptions for nine yards. This seems like the best-case scenario you can hope for in any week for Hubbard, who received half the touches that Sanders got. In Week 2, Hubbard will face a Saints defense that gave up 104 rushing yards and 4.7 yards per carry to the Titans last week, but ranked 13th in aFPA to opposing running backs a year ago. In a tough matchup and a backup role, keep Hubbard on the bench and stash him away in the event of a Sanders injury later in the year.

CAR RB Chuba Hubbard - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Atlanta Falcons

Chuba Hubbard had 466 yards and a pair of touchdowns operating as the backup running back in Carolina last season. He should retain that role this year after the Panthers signed Miles Sanders away from the Eagles. Hubbard has gotten change-of-pace work through his first two seasons in the league, so he has more fantasy value than your average backup. However, he’s still unlikely to get the kind of workload to make him worth starting while Sanders is healthy. Sit Hubbard this week and consider him worth rostering only in the event that Sanders sustains an injury during the season.

CAR RB Chuba Hubbard - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Chuba Hubbard had some quality games last year, especially splitting time with D’Onta Foreman after Christian McCaffrey was traded to the 49ers. He finished the season with 637 yards and two touchdowns, including 171 receiving yards on 14 receptions. In his two starts, however, he combined for 198 yards and a touchdown, including averaging 10.42 yards on 12 carries in a high-scoring victory over the Lions in Week 16. Hubbard is one of the few holdovers on this offense following a complete overhaul of the team and coaching staff.

Fantasy Downside
Hubbard has upside if he can land a role with double-digit touches per game, but with Miles Sanders now in town on a multi-year contract, it seems unlikely he’ll have a legit shot at the starting role. That will relegate Hubbard to mostly a handcuff role in most leagues.

2023 Bottom Line
Hubbard isn’t a bad back-of-the-roster stash candidate in deeper leagues, but his role as the backup is unlikely to yield enough production - and definitely not consistent production - to warrant serious fantasy consideration. If Miles Sanders gets hurt, however, Hubbard will quickly enter RB2 territory.
