Scouting report

MIN QB Nick Mullens - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Detroit Lions

Nick Mullens had a strong fantasy showing in the loss to the Bengals last weekend. He completed nearly 80% of his passes, throwing for over 300 yards and two touchdowns. He did throw two interceptions and took three sacks.

Despite that performance, we still have him ranked as QB16 this week. He's, at best, a superflex option for semi-finals weekend.

MIN QB Nick Mullens - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Cincinnati Bengals

At QB22, Nick Mullens is off of the fantasy radar in single-QB leagues. It's a neutral matchup, but given the state of the Vikings offense, he's a hard start to make. The Bengals have only allowed just five passing touchdowns in the last five games.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Dallas Cowboys

Nick Mullens struggled against Washington last week, with 260 yards, a touchdown, and a pick six. He also was sacked four times and the 49ers dropped their sixth game of his last seven starts. Mullens has a nice matchup against the Cowboys this week, but he hasn’t done anything this season to make him worth the risk in fantasy lineups. His 10/10 TD/Int ratio limits his upside, and he should remain on waivers in most formats.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Buffalo Bills

Nick Mullens threw for 252 yards and a pick last week against a tough Rams defense, but he came away with a much-needed win for the 49ers, aided heavily by a tremendous defensive effort. Mullens has shown flashes, but ultimately hasn’t been very good as a starting quarterback. Even against a Bills defense that ranks 23rd in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks, Mullens is too risky to trust in most leagues. Sit him.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Los Angeles Rams

Nick Mullens had 247 yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions against the Saints before the bye last week. The 49ers are in shambles right now, and while volume may lead Mullens into some nice yardage totals, given the likelihood of this team playing from behind a lot, it’s hard to get excited about any of the offensive players as fantasy options. Mullens faces a Rams defense that ranks second in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks and just forced two picks from Tom Brady on Monday night. Mullens is too risky to have in your lineup and he should be benched this week in a tough matchup.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at New Orleans Saints

Nick Mullens had 291 yards, a touchdown and a pick against the Packers last week. The 49ers continue to struggle with injuries in what may go down as a lost season, but Mullens has shown flashes of ability in the past.

This week, Mullens faces a New Orleans defense that ranks 15th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks and just forced Tom Brady into three interceptions with zero touchdown passes. While the volume should be there as the 49ers continue to play from behind, it’s risky to assume Mullens will put up big numbers without turnovers, making him a risky low-end QB2 starter at best this week.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Green Bay Packers

Nick Mullens had 238 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Seahawks last week in relief of Jimmy Garoppolo, who is now set to miss multiple weeks with an injury. Garoppolo’s extended absence will give Mullens another opportunity to audition for other teams heading into free agency.

This week, he faces a Packers defense that ranks tenth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks, making him a risky starter in most leagues. While it’s possible the Packers get up early and force Mullens to throw all game, it’s also possible they get so much pressure that Mullens throws multiple picks. If you have quarterback issues due to injury or bye weeks, he has some streaming potential due to game script, but he’s a risky QB2 in most leagues.
