Scouting report

by Chris Kucharski

DAL RB Joseph Randle - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs New York Giants
Joseph Randle has averaged 15 carries per game this season and the Cowboys gave him the opportunity to be the featured back. However, that looks to be changing. With Christine Michael now ready in the wings, Randle's playing time seems to be in jeopardy. We won't really know much until after Sunday, but if you have Randle on your roster, you should only play him if he is your third running back or flex for Week 7.

DAL RB Joseph Randle - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs New England
Joseph Randle went from fantasy stud to fantasy dud in just one week. A fumble near the goal line definitely didn't help his standing as he only carried the ball 11 times. A touchdown salvaged the fantasy day, but are the Cowboys going to stick with him with Darren McFadden waiting in the wings?

For now, yes. But Randle will face a decent Patriots run defense and another turnover could put him on the bench. Start him as a low-end RB2 for Week 5 as he still has value at this point in a limited Dallas offense because of injuries.

DAL RB Joseph Randle - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at New Orleans
The people who gambled in their drafts that Joseph Randle would be the feature back are reaping in the dividends now. He was outstanding in the first half and the three touchdowns probably helped you win your league. Randle will continue to get the majority of carries and should continue to benefit from the line play of Dallas.

This week's matchup should help too as he faces the Saints, who are 22nd in aFPA to running backs. The Cowboys will also try to protect QB Brandon Weeden on the road with the running game and Randle will be front and center with that task. Start Randle in all leagues and formats for Week 4. He is a solid RB1 for Dallas.

DAL RB Joseph Randle - Week 3, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Falcons
Although Joseph Randle is still the No. 1 back in Dallas, he only played 42 percent of the snaps last week. Lance Dunbar is getting snaps as well, but he is lining up in the slot as a receiver at times.

Randle did have a team-high 18 carries, so he is the primary ball carrier at this point. His numbers through two weeks have been pedestrian (34 carries, 116 yards, 0 TDs). The Cowboys have a good matchup this week against the Falcons run defense, so we could see Randle's best game of the early season. Start him as a solid RB2 for Week 3.

DAL RB Joseph Randle - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs Philadelphia
The first week of the season told us basically we thought coming in. Joseph Randle will get the bulk of the carries in the Dallas running game. He had 19 touches total and 107 yards from scrimmage in Week 1. With Dez Bryant out, the Cowboys might look more to the run, which would benefit Randle and the other Dallas running backs. Plus, this is a good matchup against Philadelphia. Start Randle as a solid RB2 for Week 2 and keep an eye on his snaps, especially in passing situations.

DAL RB Joseph Randle - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Giants
Somebody is going to get the bulk of the carries in Dallas, but nobody is really sure who it will be. Joseph Randle is on the top of most people's list, but we will know more after Sunday night. Until then, we have to proceed with caution with all the Cowboys running backs. If you need a RB3 or flex, Randle should produce enough to help your team. But no matter what happens, we will not see DeMarco Murray-type numbers.

DAL RB Joseph Randle - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Somebody in Dallas is going to pick up where DeMarco Murray left off. And Joseph Randle is currently first on the depth chart. Randle plays with a chip on his shoulder after being drafted in the fifth round in 2013 and looked good when he carried the ball last season. Size has been an issue for Randle in the past, but his weight is now up to 210 pounds. He will get the first shot as the Cowboys lead back and if he holds onto the job, he is poised to have a big season.

Fantasy Downside
With only 105 career carries, Randle is an unproven back in the NFL. If he doesn't produce, there are some pretty capable backs behind him in Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar. We also don't expect him to get the workload Murray did.

Bottom Line
There is a good chance Randle gets 200-plus carries and the Cowboys offensive line is still very good, so the running game will still be a focus no matter who is receiving handoffs. Randle is our RB19 and has an ADP of 36 which puts him in the 3rd to 4th round range. He will make a good RB2, so don't be afraid to reach for him as we think the situation favors him over Darren McFadden.
