WR vs. CB Matchups to Exploit & Avoid in DFS - Week 9
When it comes to selecting receivers in DFS, it’s important to understand who will cover them, as sometimes defense versus position stats alone don't tell the whole story. In addition, there can many times be defensive injuries that will have a significant, and perhaps hidden, effect on a receiver's matchup. Below we'll take a deeper look at the matchups that should help in your WR decisions for Week 9. Keep in mind the main slate is 11 games, as there are six teams on bye this week.
Note: Any unlisted matchups -- especially those of prominent WRs -- should generally be considered a push.
Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Exploit: Vernon Hargreaves is going to be at a disadvantage trying to cover one of the elite receivers of the NFL in Julio Jones. Hargreaves lines up Julio's side of the field 74 percent of his coverage routes, so he should be on Jones for most of the night. The rookie has been targeted 45 times and is yielding 0.30 points per route while allowing nearly nine yards per target. Jones and his 0.58 points per route should have field day if you're playing the slate that includes the Thursday night game.
Exploit: Jude Adjei-Barimah hasn't been good in coverage this season and should draw Mohamed Sanu, who seems to have caught Matt Ryan's eye over the last few weeks, as he's seen his targets per snap rise to 13 percent. Adjei-Barimah is being targeted on average of nearly 11 yards downfield, so Sanu could be in line for some big plays.
Be Cautious: I'm throwing up the cautious flag this week, as Desmond Trufant should follow Mike Evans around the field Thursday. Trufant has been the target for opposing QBs on just 15 percent of their throws and he's yielding just 0.19 points per route. This will be a fun matchup to watch and Evans should be an interesting tournament play with the matchup.
