Waiver Wire Watch: Week 6 Fantasy Football Targets

Editor's Note: We're happy to have Brandon Niles on the Waiver Wire Watch this year. He'll work in conjunction with Senior Editor John Paulsen to compile the weekly list of pickups and generate recommended prices for FAAB leagues.

Here is a look at the top waiver wire pickups for Week 6. To be eligible for discussion, the player must be owned in 50% or fewer Yahoo leagues, though we’ll stretch the rules a bit for the RB position, which is usually very thin. We’ll also include suggested bid prices (with a $100 budget) for those leagues that use Free Agent Acquisition Budgets (FAAB). Of course, player value depends on league characteristics and team needs. Players are listed by position in order of importance. For extremely shallow or extremely deep leagues, be sure to review our Rest-of-Season Rankings (updated every Tuesday) to get an idea of how to value players not on this list.

This week there’s not a key pickup to go after really, but a whole group of RBs who have a chance to become every-down starters, and one WR that may be the last player left standing on his team. If you have the #1 waiver position and you can hold off, this may be a week where you’re better off waiting until after the waiver period to take a gamble on one of the upside backs or TE streamers.

Quarterbacks

Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis Colts ($1)

Brissett had a pick against the 49ers on Sunday, but he also threw for 314 yards and ran in a touchdown, turning in a pretty good day as a streaming option. Brissett faces a Titans defense that was shredded by DeShaun Watson two weeks ago. He should be a good streaming option for the second straight week while Andrew Luck continues to miss time.

Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams ($1)

Goff had a rough game, as expected, against the tough Seattle defense, throwing for 288 yards and a pair of interceptions. He also lost a fumble in a tough divisional loss. Goff’s value remains solid as a streamer in good matchups and a nice backup option on your bench. He has a tough game against the Jaguars this week, but the schedule eases up after Week 12.

Josh McCown, New York Jets ($1)

McCown only had 194 yards against the Browns on Sunday, but he threw a pair of touchdowns and made good use of his top WR and top TE in the Jets’ third victory of the season. He should be a decent streaming option this week against a struggling Patriots defense that has allowed more points to opposing QBs per game than any other team this year.

Next up: Patriots, @ Dolphins, Falcons

I’m not buying: Brian Hoyer had a nice game against the Colts, but Washington will make it harder on him, even without Josh Norman. I’m okay with holding Blake Bortles for future matchups and as a low-end QB2 option, but I’m waiting until he faces the Colts next week before I add him. I still don’t trust Joe Flacco to deliver after a horrible start to the season, despite a soft schedule on the horizon. With Sam Bradford still clearly banged up, I'm going to stay away from the Minnesota QB situation for a couple more weeks until they face the Browns in Week 8.

Deep Stash Options: I don’t know if DeShone Kizer’s benching will last, but Kevin Hogan has looked better in limited looks. Mitch Trubisky looked like a rookie in his first start on Monday night, but he has a Week 8 matchup with the Saints that might make him worth stashing as he looks to improve as a starter. Colin Kaepernick quietly accounted for 18 total touchdowns in 12 games last season for a horrible team. If someone gets hurt and he lands on a team with some talent around him, he could quickly become a steady QB option.
