North Carolina Sports Betting: FanDuel Teams with PGA Tour, More Books Apply for Licenses
FanDuel Sportsbook is the latest operator to make a splash in North Carolina sports betting as the big-name brand is partnering with the PGA Tour to bring sports betting to sports fans in the state. Here are the details.
PGA Tour and FanDuel Partner in NC
FanDuel Sportsbook has agreed to a partnership with the PGA Tour to bring North Carolina residents sports betting once the state officially goes live. State law requires sportsbook operators to partner with professional leagues, facilities, or teams. FanDuel already had a relationship with the PGA Tour so it was a no-brainer to team in for the North Carolina launch.
The deal looks to be a commercial WDA with the major intent being getting FanDuel a sports betting license as opposed to a sponsorship of the major golf league.
11 Operators Apply for Licenses
The state of North Carolina has been busy since announcing its December 27 deadline for sportsbooks to apply for their sports betting license. At least 11 sportsbooks have applied for a license and it will take up to 60 days for the committee to approve operators. There is a $50,000 licensing fee for an operator to score their Service Provider License.
What Other Sportsbooks Will Join North Carolina Sports Betting?
FanDuel Sportsbook is now the third operator to strike up a partnership in the state of North Carolina. This ensures FanDuel will be available when the state officially launches sports betting in 2024. bet365 was the first to partner in NC by securing a deal with the Charlotte Hornets. ESPN Bet powered by Penn was next by partnering with Quail Hollow Club.
It is expected that top brands like DraftKings, BetMGM, and Caesars will also join North Carolina sports betting.
When Will NC Betting Launch Online?
The question on everyone's mind still remains. When will North Carolina launch online sports betting? The state has until June 14, 2024, to get sports betting live online. The North Carolina Lottery Commission already announced it will not be ready by Super Bowl LVIII in 2024. The big game takes place on February 11, 2024.
We could see a situation similar to Massachusetts where the sportsbooks launch just before March Madness. Massachusetts went live on March 10, 2023. Things are moving in the right direction as operators are finally applying for licenses. Now, it's up to the committee to get through the approval process and to finalize rules before an online launch.
