If you took Derek Schouman's versatility, Derek Fine's blocking ability, and Shawn Nelson's pass-catching acumen and mixed them all together, you'd have one remarkable NFL tight end.
Schouman, a third-year pro, will likely be the starter opening night in New England, simply because he can do more things well.
"Derek Schouman right now, to me, is the most complete tight end that we have," said Coiner. "He has the ability to be inside or outside, he's done a lot of good things, but he has to maintain his blocking ability."
Schouman was a seventh-round pick out of Boise State in 2007 who caught 18 passes his first two seasons but earned playing time last season mainly as a blocker and a player who could line up in the fullback position when needed. That versatility is what sets him apart.
