Raiders Beat: RB1 job 'appears to be' Latavius Murray's for the rest of the season

Raiders beat writer Bill Williamson on Latavius Murray's recent ascension:

The job appears to be Murray’s for the rest of the season. He had 23 carries for 76 yards against the 49ers. Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew have been disappointments this season. It is likely neither will be back next year. Thus, Murray will get the chance in the final three games to show Oakland it doesn’t have to worry about finding a lead back. Murray is an interesting player. After missing his rookie year last season with an injury, the former sixth-round draft pick started very slowly. But he has played well in the past three weeks, highlighted by his 90-yard touchdown run against the Chiefs on Nov. 20. The Chiefs will clearly be keying on Murray in this game. It will be fascinating to see who wins this battle.

Fantasy Impact:

After saying that Murray wouldn't be the workhorse, the team gave Murray workhorse-type carries in a grind-it-out win against the 49ers in Week 14. Murray has a terrific matchup against the Chiefs, who have yielded 4.9 YPC this season. The question is -- can Derek Carr provide enough of a threat in the passing game to keep Kansas City from keying on Murray?

Raiders QB Derek Carr is getting some help.

The rookie quarterback has struggled this season, and he hasn’t had a lot of support. But in recent games that has changed. Of course, keys have been running back Latavius Murray and tight end Mychal Rivera.

The two 2013 sixth-round picks are becoming key parts of the Oakland offense. Both players helped Carr as Oakland beat rival San Francisco, 24-13, on Sunday.

This is good news for Oakland for the remainder of the season, but, truly, it is more important for the future. Oakland is 2-11. This season has been a disaster and that won’t change regardless of what happens in the final three weeks. The Raiders are about the future.

Fantasy Impact:

The bog article goes on to say that if Murray can be a workhorse running back and Rivera can be a top tight end option, it will expedite Carr’s development. They can be core players for the long haul. If the Raiders can enter January feeling strongly about both of them moving forward, that's a couple less positions of need.

Raiders plan to stick with Derek Carr at QB

Interim Oakland Raiders coach Tony Sparano has no intention of sitting Derek Carr the remainder of the season, one day after pulling the rookie quarterback in the fourth quarter of Oakland's blowout loss to St. Louis.

Carr had arguably his worst game as a pro against the Rams, throwing two costly interceptions while failing to engineer a single scoring drive. He failed to complete a pass longer than 18 yards and finished with a season-low 50.5 passer rating.

Don't read much into the move. Sparano said Carr will remain the team's starter and that there have been no discussions about resting the rookie.

"There hasn't been really any thought about that," Sparano said. "I didn't get a lot of those questions [when the Raiders won], so there really hasn't been a lot of that kind of thought. There was a thought about that in the fourth quarter of the game when I decided to do that and that was purely my decision to do that at that point. There was just no need to keep Derek out there at that point any longer. Give Matt an opportunity to go out there and let Matt play a little bit and that was that."

Fantasy Impact:

Sparano removed Carr early in the fourth quarter and replaced him with veteran Matt Schaub, who had an even rougher time than Carr. Schaub lost a fumble on his first drive then threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown on his second drive the story pointed out.

Slow starts offensively are becoming an issue for the Carolina Panthers and quarterback Cam Newton.

During a five-game losing streak the Panthers (3-7-1) have scored only 26 points combined in the first three quarters, an average of 5.2 points per game.

They had only three points through the first three quarters of Sunday’s 19-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, who came into the game with the worst rated pass defense in the NFL. The Panthers scored a combined 48 points in the fourth quarter, including 28 the past two weeks against Philadelphia and Atlanta.

Newton hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in the first three quarters since a 3-yarder to Kelvin Benjamin six games ago in a 37-37 tie at Cincinnati.

Fantasy Impact:

The story goes on to say over the last five games, Newton has no touchdowns and five interceptions in the first half. In the second half, he has five touchdowns (all in the fourth quarter) to three interceptions. Newton’s passer rating this season is 80.3, worse than every quarterback except Oakland rookie Derek Carr (76.0), Minnesota rookie Teddy Bridgewater (75.0), Jacksonville rookie Blake Bortles (72.2) and New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith (65.6). With a bye in Week 12, the hope for Newton owners is he can heal and come back strong for the final stretch of the fantasy season. But owners are likely finding it tough to trust him and may have already moved on.
