Antonio Pierce, the Giants’ defensive leader and starting middle linebacker, is out of Sunday’s game and possibly a lot more due to a bulging disc in his neck.
That stunning news was delivered from the team this evening after Pierce returned from an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York late this afternoon. Officially, Pierce is “out” of Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons and beyond that, the Giants have only said he’s out “indefinitely.”
The exact time frame will depend on how Pierce’s neck responds to treatment and whether the swelling in the disc shrinks at all on its own, but early indications are that “indefinitely” could mean at least six weeks.
“I’m shocked with what I heard from the doctors this afternoon,” Pierce said in a statement released by the team. “I had no idea that what happened a few weeks ago could keep me off the field. I didn’t think it was that serious. I’m going to do everything the doctors tell me to do so I can get back out on the field as soon as possible.”
