Doug Pederson has named Jalen Hurts his starting quarterback for Sunday, the Eagles announced on Tuesday afternoon.

This is a move that seemed obvious but could also end up having major ramifications for the future of the Eagles and Wentz, the story said. It will be Hurts' first start. The story also said, ultimately, the goal might still be to fix Wentz, but Pederson couldn’t ignore the spark that Hurts gave the Eagles on Sunday in the 30-16 loss to the Packers. Peterson mentioned Hurts created more time to make plays, but certainly wasn't perfect against the Packers.

Eagles quarterback Doug Pederson benched quarterback Carson Wentz for Jalen Hurts on Sunday, but he hasn’t decided whether that was more than just a one-time thing.

Pederson said this morning on WIP that he hasn’t made up his mind about whether he’ll start Wentz or Hurts on Sunday against the Saints.

As the story said, Hurts would seem to be the obvious choice after giving the Eagles a spark in Sunday’s loss to the Packers. But the story also added Pederson insisted he hasn’t decided yet and will announce it publicly when he knows.

The Eagles took out QB Carson Wentz during the third quarter against the Packers and Jalen Hurts saw a complete series for the first time in his career.

Hurts’ run started with a very nice deep pass for fellow rookie Jalen Raegor, but the offense stalled out after that, including a holding penalty that killed any momentum. We’ll see if this is finally a sign of things to come in Philadelphia.

No word yet on if the Eagles will actually make the change yet, despite many fans and media calling for the benching of Wentz. It will be quite interesting over the next day or so, leading up to the Monday night tilt with the Seahawks. Pederson has taken a liking to Hurts in some packages this season and in some two-point plays. The Eagles need some kind of speak soon or heads could be rolling.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson has been crystal clear that he will not bench starting quarterback Carson Wentz for rookie Jalen Hurts. But Hurts might start to get more snaps as a gadget player on offense.

“I think I can get him in the game a little bit more,” Pederson said.

Of course, Hurts only played one snap on Sunday against the Browns, so playing Hurts “a little bit more” wouldn’t necessarily mean giving him a significant role in the offense, the story pointed out. So far this season Hurts has 12 carries for 56 yards and one catch for three yards. He has yet to throw a pass. Hurts was a surprising second round pick by the team, so the QB controversy is real in Philly right now.

Doug Pederson insisted Carson Wentz will be his starting quarterback next week and appeared surprised by the mere suggestion he might decide otherwise.

“No questions about it,” Pederson said.

He said he didn’t consider relieving Wentz at any point Sunday. Not after one of Wentz’s two interceptions was returned for a touchdown. Not after Wentz took a sack in the end zone for a safety. Those miscues totaled nine points in a 22-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns that dropped the Eagles to 3-6-1.

Pederson added that benching the franchise quarterback would “send the wrong message to the football team that the season’s over,” an opinion that either endorses the current malaise of the Eagles offense or speaks volumes about how the coaching staff thinks Hurts would fare, the story said. The Eagles have a brutal schedule coming up where they face the Seahawks, Packers, Saints and Cardinals. It would make sense the team wouldn't want Hurts to face any of those defenses in his first start. The Birds close the season with the Cowboys and Washington. Considering how bad the NFC East is right now, those could actually be meaningful games.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson said that he did not consider replacing Carson Wentz with Jalen Hurts during Sunday's night's game against the Dallas Cowboys, adding that Jalen Hurts and Nate Sudfeld need to be ready in case that situation comes up down the road.

Wentz turned the ball over four times and ended 15-of-27 for 123 yards with a pair of touchdowns in a 23-9 win over the Cowboys. Wentz is on pace for the worst statistical season of his career. He leads the league in turnovers (16), interceptions (12) and sacks (32), is 31st in completion percentage (58.4) and 29th in yards per attempt (6.1). His play had picked up over the last few games, as he led multiple comeback efforts, before tailing off against Dallas, which entered as the most giving defense in the NFL.

Doug Pederson said today that he thinks the Eagles can do more with Jalen Hurts lining up at quarterback and running zone-read plays.

Hurts provided a spark for the offense in the first half when the team trailed 17-0 and couldn't even produce a first down. The Eagles are battling injuries at their skill positions so factoring in Hurts makes some sense. So far this season Hurts has thrown one pass for 18 yards, caught one pass for three yards, and run seven times for 49 yards.

Jalen Hurts, the Eagles' second-round pick in April's draft, threw for 32 touchdowns last season for Oklahoma and rushed for another 20 TDs, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. He showed some of that dual-threat ability at training camp. His effectiveness was most felt in goal-line situations, particularly on zone read looks.

"We felt this week with him up, it could give us an opportunity to possibly use him in those situations that we did, and obviously he went in, executed them well," said Eagles coach Doug Pederson, "and it's a starting point as something we'll evaluate each week."

The story said the natural next step is to get the ball in his hands, the story said. The two-QB look averaged six yards per play, even though Hurts was used as a decoy. The Eagles say they are looking into the wrinkle, but starting off 0-2 could mean we see more of Hurts sooner than later.

Carson Wentz left practice on Sunday with what's being described as a soft tissue injury, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, but the silver lining is he's listed as day-to-day and the ailment itself is viewed as minor.

Carson Wentz has to stay healthy in 2020 if the Philadelphia Eagles are to challenge for the NFC East crown, in their quest to be the first team in the division to repeat as champs since they did it in 2003 and 2004. The veteran quarterback is giving the team a bit of a scare just two weeks ahead of the season opener on Sept. 13 against Washington. This could Hurts a few more snaps at practice as he tries to pass Sudfeld for the QB2 job.
