Lions coach Jim Schwartz is shutting down tight end Brandon Pettigrew, the Lions' first-round pick out of Oklahoma State, for an unspecified period of time.
Pettigrew has been suffering through a quadriceps injury that developed the first weekend of training camp. The injury was initially thought to be day-to-day, but it's continued to hamper the 6-foot-5, 265-pound rookie.
"We've had a lot of tests on it, consulted a lot of different people," Schwartz said. "It's been a nagging thing. It hasn't responded as well as we would've hoped.
"I don't want to declare anybody out, but it's unlikely that he'll play versus Cleveland. And probably rather than taking a day-to-day approach with it, we'll maybe take a little bit of a longer-term approach with it, with an idea of getting him back, rather than every day trying to get him back on the field. He didn't suffer a setback, but every time he went out, he just wasn't ready yet."
