Garrett Gilbert has suddenly made a long and wildly unimpressive Dallas Cowboys quarterback carousel mushroom into a quarterback controversy, loosely stated, and even if it is for the right to lead a 2-7 team into the second half of a 2020 season torpedoed by injury and a myriad of other glaring factors. It's been an unmitigated disaster following the season-ending injury to Dak Prescott suffered in Week 5, and Andy Dalton has now missed the last two games after suffering a concussion and then having been placed on the COVID-19 list while trying to be cleared from the first injury.

It's undetermined if Dalton will be cleared to return from both concussion protocol and the COVID-19 list in Week 11, but it's likely he'll suit up, considering the fact he'll have two weeks before the Cowboys meet the Minnesota Vikings at US Bank Stadium. The story went on to say the problem for Dalton and the Cowboys is now clear, because they need to figure out if they'll return the keys to him after consistently hammering home their belief in him and accompanying salary, or if they'll ride with Gilbert.

As far as Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones is concerned, Dak Prescott's season-ending right ankle injury does nothing to change the organization's thinking about the quarterback.

"Absolutely not," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. "He's our future. He's special. If anyone can overcome anything, it would be Dak. This is something that our doctors feel good that he'll overcome and come back better than ever."

Prescott is set to be an unrestricted free agent after this season after playing on the $31.4 million franchise tag in 2020. The Cowboys can use the tag on him again next March, which would cost $37.7 million, or allow him to test the free-agent market, the story said.

But Andy Dalton is not Dak Prescott, who was off to the best start of his career and the best start ever by a Cowboys quarterback.

The offense will have to change to a degree, relying even more on the run game.

Being in contract talks down to the deadline is one thing, actually being close to a deal is another. The Cowboys will let Dak Prescott play the season on the franchise tag before potentially looking to hammer out a long-term deal next summer. Franchising him a second time would be expensive, but may still be the course of action the Cowboys take. Dak was excellent in 2019, and currently sits as our number three overall quarterback for the 2020 season. Dak now has an even more explosive supporting cast than he did last season, and may be looking to play his way into a Patrick Mahomes like payday. Prescott does not project to be adversely affected by the lack of a long term deal, and should remain one of fantasy football’s elite producers at the quarterback position.

This was the expected outcome in what has turned into a long-term standoff between Prescott and Jerry Jones. Prescott has steadily improved since entering he league and led one of the most efficient offenses in the NFL last year, but the Cowboys have been reluctant to give him a long-term deal. He will now play the 2020 season on the franchise tag and rehash negotiations next offseason. Prescott has plenty of motivation to put up huge numbers this year.

But, there was expected to be more urgency in getting a deal done that would lock the team and Prescott together for the long term while making the quarterback one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL. Prescott already signed his franchise tender and without a deal with make a little less than $31.5 million this season.
