During a Tuesday appearance on KNBR, Kyle Shanahan said he believes Jimmy Garoppolo will be healthy enough to play in Week 7 against the Colts.

“I mean, he’s doing good,” Shanahan said, via 49ersWebZone.com. “We’ll see when we get back [after the bye week]. I think he’ll be ready to go next week when we get back. That’s the plan. I know he’s doing a lot better now than he was last week.”

Lance is dealing with a knee sprain he suffered while playing in place of Garoppolo in Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals. The team says Garoppolo will start again when healthy. The Niners have a bye in Week 6.

The bad news is it's a Sunday night game, so owners will need a backup plan if they are counting on Lance or Garoppolo in Week 7. We likely won't know much more until next week.

This was expected with Jimmy G missing practice this week. Lance is 4for4's #14 QB this week.

Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (knee) and WR Amari Cooper (hamstring) are questionable Week 5 against the New York Giants according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. Both are expected to play.

Look for the two to have their normal workloads after strong Week 4 performances.

Vikings RB Dalvin Cook (ankle) is questionable for Week 5 against the Detroit Lions, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Cook had his workload limited Week 4 and could be in a similar situation Week 5 against the lowly Lions defense.

Cowboys WR Amari Cooper (ribs) and RB Ezekiel Elliott (knee) did not practice Wednesday according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

Neither player is in danger of missing Week 5 as of now but both should log at least limited work ahead of Friday's final injury report.

Vikings RB told reporters Wednesday that he is still trying to shake his ankle injury. "I'm not 100 percent yet. I'm still working to get back to wear to need to be back at."

As part of a mailbag question, someone asked what the game plan would look like with Trey Lance under center.

I expect it will be a “Back to the Future”-type situation for Kyle Shanahan and Mike McDaniel, who had rookies at quarterback (Robert Griffin III) and running back (Alfred Morris) when they were assistants in Washington in 2012. That team led the NFL in rushing and went to the playoffs. Morris finished with 1,613 rushing yards and Griffin with 815 yards.

The story said the one big difference is Lance attempted 318 passes at North Dakota State while Griffin attempted 1,192 throws at Baylor, which points more to a run-heavy attack. Anther issue is Sermon has only been OK as a runner over two games, and even if Mitchell returns from a shoulder injury, he's a rookie as well, so there are a lot of questions with the run game. The Niners do have the luxury of a bye in Week 6.

Earlier today there was a report that Garoppolo said the injury felt like someone stepped on his calf. He wasn't able to play in the second half in Week 4, giving way to Lance. Reports earlier today said Garoppolo could miss a couple weeks. The Niners do have a bye in Week 6.

Trey Lance targeted Deebo Samuel on seven of his 18 pass attempts in the second half and both of Samuel’s touchdowns came with Lance at quarterback.

Meanwhile, it was another quiet afternoon for Brandon Aiyuk, who was targeted three times and who had one catch for 15 yards.

The 49ers haven’t had a wide receiver reach 1,000 yards since Anquan Boldin did it in 2014. Samuel is already 49 percent of the way there and is on pace for 2,083 yards. The single-season receiving yards record is 1,964 set by Calvin Johnson in 2012, the story said. The story added through four games, Samuel has gotten 32.3 percent of the 49ers’ targets. Aiyuk has gotten 8.5 percent. With Lance expected to start at least the next game, it's good to know he's looking Samuel's way.
