Geno Smith said he was told by Jets QB coach David Lee that he will start.

There were rumors the team was going to start David Garrard but that looks like it won't be the case. Smith has thrown 19 interceptions and has fumbled four times.

Jets HC Rex Ryan didn’t build much suspense during his Monday meeting with the media before announcing that Geno Smith will remain in the starting QB job.

Ryan never pulled Smith in favor of Matt Simms during the loss to the Ravens, but he’s done it in the fourth quarter of two other blowout losses this season.

Smith continues to look shaky and was 9-of-22 for 127 yards and two interceptions with the bulk of the yards coming when the Jets were already way behind. This week, it's the Dolphins in a pretty tough matchup. He won't be a safe fantasy option.

There are two things that stand out to me about Jets quarterback Geno Smith seven games into his rookie season.

One is his willingness to pull the trigger on downfield throws, which is always a positive in the NFL. Will that result in some forced balls and interceptions? Yes it will. But I believe the willingness to drive the ball down the field is a positive. Quarterbacks who are willing to make throws will throw some interceptions. People will criticize them for those mistakes, but they don’t look at the plays those quarterbacks make with that style.

The other thing is Smith's willingness to stand in the pocket with bodies around him and deliver the ball, and even take some hits. He’s not a flincher, he doesn’t shy away, he’s tough and a strong pocket quarterback. I’m not sure you can teach that. For example, that’s one of Blaine Gabbert's major undoings. He’s soft in the pocket. You can’t be soft in the pocket and be a quality NFL quarterback. And Geno is very tough in the pocket.

Smith has some misreads. He forces some throws. He makes some decisions that are head scratchers. But you expect that because this system is new to him. He ran a pure spread offense at West Virginia, and now he's running a NFL offense.

Greg Cosell's story mentions Smith has his share of misreads and forced throws and decisions he'd like back, but it also says Smith is confident in the pocket with bodies around him and he doesn't shy away. Cosell compared that part of the game to Blaine Gabbert, who struggles in that department, and thus has struggled to put up fantasy numbers. Smith is at least progressing and can be a decent QB2 option depending on the matchup, but his future looks encouraging.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has undergone surgery on his injured right shoulder today.

The surgery, which will end Sanchez's season, was performed by Dr. James Andrews, whom Sanchez has consulted over the past weeks.

Sanchez's rehab attempt didn't work out so he's finished for 2013 and likely played his last game as a NY Jet with the emergence of Geno Smith.

Stephen Hill's availability is a bit of a surprise, but it looks like he's good to go for Monday night. If he were questionable, we would avoid him, but the probable tag means he's virtually certain to play. He is a risk/reward start in a nice matchup with the Falcons.

That's the reason the team signed David Nelson this week. The Jets are hurting at WR as Stephen Hill may also not play because of a concussion. That certainly isn't going to help QB Geno Smith. You may want to think about if Holmes is worth a roster spot if the injury will keep him out that long...
