Owners need to have a backup option in place in case the rookie can’t play. Robert Woods would be the best option in Buffalo, but Mike Williams would get a bump as well.

Wide receiver Mike Williams was a surprise healthy scratch in Buffalo yesterday. It sounds like he would prefer to be playing elsewhere.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that Williams' agent Hadley Engelhard was given permission to "gauge interest" from other teams to seek a trade, according to a source involved in the situation. Williams was not on the injury report last week, so the Bills chose to keep him on the bench in favor of Chris Hogan and Marquise Goodwin.

Bills general manager Doug Whaley said Monday the team is "not actively shopping" Williams, but confirmed that a trade was requested.

"If he gets me compensation worthy of a No. 1 receiver, which he claimed he is," Whaley said, "then we would entertain it."

Rapoport reported that the team needed more help on special teams Sunday because of injuries, so Williams wasn't active. Williams was a surprise first-team starter in the team's first preseason game with Robert Woods moved to the second team. But since then, Woods has taken over as the team's WR2 opposite Sammy Watkins. As the story goes on to say: it's hard to imagine Williams having any market. He's due $5.2 million guaranteed next year, which is a huge number for a guy that has 358 yards in 11 games since the start of the 2013 season. Williams isn't going anywhere; he's a sunk cost for Buffalo.

The most intriguing part of Sunday's game, from a playing-time perspective, was Bills WR Mike Williams not being the exclusive third option at receiver. Until this point, we've seen little of Goodwin in the offense and even less of Hogan. But the Bills shuffled all three of those players through as their third receiver against the Lions.

Williams continues to play behind Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods in terms of snaps and saw action on just 26 of 71 total snaps (Watkins had 70 and Woods 67). While new starting QB Kyle Orton should help the passing game, if Williams can't get on the field he's a fantasy risk.

The Bills are moving on from E.J. Manuel.

The Kyle Orton era has begun in Buffalo, and Bills players already see the difference with the veteran passer running the show.

"We just had a different approach to practice," wide receiver Sammy Watkins said, according to ESPN.com. "(Orton) demands what he wants out of us. He's more of a veteran guy. The way he talked, the way he handles business, the way he looks at plays and breaks down defenses, it's kind of different than EJ.

"He reads it quicker, the ball is coming out faster. That's just some things that we have to adjust to."

Wide receiver Robert Woods has also picked up on the change.

"His directness in the huddle," he said, "telling us what to look for and be ready for when we're breaking the huddle when he calls the play."

The hope is that Orton infuses life into the Bills' passing game, which would help Watkins, Woods and the rest of the Buffalo receivers.
