WR vs. CB Matchups to Exploit & Avoid in DFS - Week 10
When it comes to selecting receivers in DFS, it’s important to understand who will cover them, as sometimes defense versus position stats alone don't tell the whole story. In addition, there can many times be defensive injuries that will have a significant, and perhaps hidden, effect on a receiver's matchup. Below we'll take a deeper look at the matchups that should help in your WR decisions for Week 9. Keep in mind the main slate is 11 games, as there are six teams on bye this week.
Note: Any unlisted matchups -- especially those of prominent WRs -- should generally be considered a push.
Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens
Exploit: Tavon Young will draw Terrelle Pryor on Thursday night and this is a bad matchup for Young. Even though it might be tough to trust any Browns position player, Pryor certainly has the upside to produce. Young is allowing 0.32 points per route and nearly nine yards per target. If you’re playing a slate with Thursday’s game, you might want to consider Pryor, even on a short turnaround.
Exploit: Joe Haden is a beaten man. I heard an interview and the depression in his voice is unmistakable. Steve Smith finds himself in a favorable matchup this week. Smith does move around the field, but primarily lines up on Haden’s side of the field, so Haden should draw Smith in coverage for most of the night. Haden is yielding 0.33 points per route and is being targeted an average of nearly 16 yards downfield.
Exploit: Tramon Williams is a shell of his former self from his Green Bay days and will have trouble keeping up with Mike Wallace on Thursday. Williams is allowing 0.40 points per route and nearly eight yards per target. Wallace should be able to beat Williams easily on deep routes.
Kansas City Chiefs at Carolina Panthers
Avoid: if Jeremy Maclin doesn’t play this week, I’m not at all enamored with the Chief receivers this week, even though Carolina has been susceptible to giving up points and the deep ball. Chris Conley might be the only one I consider with his matchup against Daryl Worley, as Worley is yielding 0.31 points per route and is being targeted an average of 18 yards downfield.
Exploit: Phillip Gaines lines up on Kelvin Benjamin’s side of the field 92 percent of his coverage routes, so he should cover Benjamin most of the day. Benjamin is averaging 0.42 points per route and Gaines is allowing 0.30 points per route while being targeted by opposing QBs on 24 percent of their throws. Gaines is also yielding nearly 10 yards per target.
