The Philadelphia Eagles signed QB Josh McCown and waived WR Braxton Miller in a corresponding move Saturday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
With Nate Sudfeld out with a broken wrist and Cody Kessler suffering a concussion, the Eagles badly needed an extra backup quarterback, at least to get them through the preseason, with rookie Clayton Thorson the only available quarterback behind Carson Wentz, who still may be held out during the preseason. McCown comes out of his short-lived retirement (he was just hired by ESPN in June) to back up Wentz and likely get some first-team reps during the Eagles' regular-season dress rehearsal this week against the Ravens. Sudfeld and Kessler aren't expected to miss too much time so it will be interesting to see how the Eagles carry the quarterbacks when all are healthy. Miller simply never panned out due to injuries and lack of production after signing with the Eagles' practice squad in 2018.
