The Training Room: Week 6 Injury Updates
We are more than a quarter way through the regular season already and the injuries, in addition to bye weeks, are starting to play a factor. Knowing what injuries are occurring and how that impacts your team is crucial to stay ahead of the competition. Let's take a look at the injuries that occurred this week. **Updated 10/12/19**
Patrick Mahomes, QB Chiefs
Injury: Sprained Ankle
Timetable For Return: Expected to play Week 6.
Potential Replacement: Matt Moore
Comments: Mahomes states that his ankle is feeling good but it's not perfect. Hopefully he doesn't sustain any further re-aggravations to his ankle that will allow him to start to feel healthier.
Aaron Rodgers, QB Packers
Injury: Sprained Knee
Timetable For Return: Expected to play Week 6
Potential Replacement: Tim Boyle
Comments: Rodgers popped up on the injury report late in the week which is usually a concern, but there has been no reports or indication that he is in danger of missing MNF. The offense isn't at full strength yet with Adams missing another week, but he'll continue to be a solid option against the Lions.
Marquise Brown, WR Ravens
Injury: Sprained Ankle
Timetable For Return: Ruled OUT for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Willie Snead, Miles Boykin
Comments: Brown hurt his ankle last week and although he returned to the game after injuring it last week, his ankle hasn't responded quick enough to make the Ravens feel comfortable about him playing this week. It doesn't sound like it will be an extended absence, but with him having foot issues already heading into this season, I would just keep tabs as to how he progresses next week.
Alvin Kamara, RB Saints
Injury: Sprained Ankle
Timetable For Return: Game Time Decision, expected to play Week 6
Potential Replacement: Latavius Murray
Comments: Kamara was added to the injury report on Thursday, but all reports have been positive that Kamara is expected to play Week 6. He went through walkthrough on Saturday as well so he should be in your lineup if you have him on your roster.
David Johnson, RB Cardinals
Injury: Strained Low Back
Timetable For Return: Game Time Decision, expected to play
Potential Replacement: Chase Edmonds
Comments: Johnson was able to practice on Friday and is on track to play this weekend after dealing with a low back injury last week. There is some risk that his low back might give him trouble as the game progresses, but he should be a solid option if you have him on your roster.
George Kittle, TE 49ers
Injury: Strained Groin
Timetable For Return: Questionable for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Ross Dwelley
Comments: Kittle was a late addition to the injury report this week and his status is up in the air as to whether or not he'll be available this week. Adam Schefter reports that there's concern Kittle won't be able to finish the game if he ends up playing which sounds like the 49ers are more likely to play it safe with their best skilled position player.
Hunter Henry, TE Chargers
Injury: Tibia Fracture
Timetable For Return: Expected to play Week 6
Potential Replacement: Virgil Green
Comments: Henry is expected to make his return from a tibia fracture that has cost him the last month. Coach Lynn has stated that Henry will be limited upon his return so some patience is required as he works his way back up to full speed.
Todd Gurley, RB Rams
Injury: Quad Contusion
Timetable For Return: Ruled OUT for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Malcom Brown, Darrell Henderson
Comments: Like we had mentioned earlier in the week, quad contusions are very difficulty to return back from quickly. Gurley will be questionable at best for Week 7 as well until we see Gurley back on the practice field at some point.
Mason Rudolph, QB Steelers
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Return: Ruled OUT for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Devlin Hodges
Comments: Rudolph has been able to practice this week but the Steelers won't risk him being out there and will start Hodges against the Chargers. With the Steelers having a Week 7 bye, Rudolph should be back under center in Week 8.
Wayne Gallman, RB Giants
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Return: Week-To-Week, Ruled OUT for TNF
Potential Replacement: Jon Hilliman, Eli Penny
Comments: Gallman will go through the protocol to determine when he might be available for the Giants but time will not be on his side with the Giants playing Thursday night against the Patriots. With Saquon Barkley potentially returning for Week 6, Gallman would return back to a change of pace role when he does get cleared.
Phillip Dorsett, WR Patriots
Injury: Strained Hamstring
Timetable For Return: Week-To-Week, Ruled OUT for TNF
Potential Replacement: Jakobi Meyers, Gunner Olszewski
Comments: Dorsett will likely get an MRI on his hamstring to determine the severity and then from there we can get a better gauge as to when he might return. With the Patriots playing on TNF for Week 6, he might struggle to be ready.
Rashaad Penny, RB Seahawks
Injury: Strained Hamstring
Timetable For Return: Questionable for Week 6
Potential Replacement: C.J. Prosise, Chris Carson
Comments: Being added to the injury report late in the week is not a good sign for availability that week, and Penny is a legitimate game time call against the Browns.
James Washington, WR Steelers
Injury: Sprained Shoulder
Timetable For Return: Ruled OUT for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Diontae Johnson, Johnny Holton
Comments: We are unsure of what type of injury Washington is dealing with but the reports are that he is expected to miss a few weeks due to the injury. With the Steelers having a Week 7 bye, he'll likely attempt to make a comeback for Week 8 depending on how his recovery goes.
James O'Shaughnessy, TE Jaguars
Injury: Torn ACL
Timetable For Recovery: Out for the season
Potential Replacement: Geoff Swaim
Comments: O'Shaugnessy was diagnosed with a torn ACL that will end his year. Depending on if there are other tissues involved might change his timetable but he shouldn't have too much trouble getting ready for next season.
Sammy Watkins, WR Chiefs
Injury: Strained Hamstring
Timetable For Recovery: Ruled OUT for Week 6.
Potential Replacement: Demarcus Robinson, Mecole Hardman
Comments: Watkins will continue to try and rehab his hamstring injury in hopes to be back for Week 7. However, given his trouble with injuries in the past, he'll be highly questionable until we see him return back to practice.
Wayne Gallman, RB Giants
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Recovery: Week-To-Week, Ruled OUT for TNF
Potential Replacement: Jon Hilliman
Comments: The Giants offense is super thin and could be in for a rough night against the Patriots. If they had played Sunday, then Gallman would've had a better chance of suiting up but he should be ready and cleared through protocol in time for Week 7.
Sterling Shepard, WR Giants
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Recovery: Week-To-Week, Ruled OUT for TNF
Potential Replacement: Darius Slayton
Comments: Much like Gallman, if the Giants had played on Sunday then they would've had a better chance of having Shepard on the field.
Evan Engram, TE Giants
Injury: Sprained Knee
Timetable For Recovery: Week-To-Week. Ruled OUT for TNF
Potential Replacement: Rhett Ellison
Comments: Did I mention that the Giants were going to be shorthanded Thursday against the Patriots? Yikes. We're not sure the extent of Engram's knee issue, but hopefully this extended time off will allow him to get healthy before Week 7 against the Cardinals.
On The Mend
Saquon Barkley, RB Giants
Injury: High Ankle Sprain
Timetable For Recovery: Week-To-Week, Ruled OUT for TNF
Potential Replacement:
Comments: Barkley continues to practice in limited fashion which is a great sign, but with the Giants playing on Thursday night, it would've been tough for him to be successful on a short week coming back from a high ankle sprain. Week 7 is looking more like the week that he makes his return barring any setbacks or issues that come up.
Sam Darnold, QB Jets
Injury: Mononucleosis
Timetable For Recovery: Expected to play Week 6.
Potential Replacement: Jeff Falk
Comments: Darnold has been finally cleared for contact and should have no restrictions heading into Week 6. The only thing there might be concerns about is fatigue as mono does have a tendency to sap a lot of your energy, but overall he could be a serviceable option and a big boost for the entire Jets offense.
Tyreek Hill, WR Chiefs
Injury: Dislocated SC Joint
Timetable For Recovery: Game time decision
Potential Replacement:
Comments: Hill practiced all last week in limited fashion so there is a good chance that he will suit up to play Week 6 barring any setbacks. He's had some soreness in his injured shoulder as he's gone through practice, so although he's trending in the right direction to play, his snaps might be limited. If he ends up playing, he needs to be in your lineup.
Devin Singletary, RB Bills
Injury: Strained Hamstring
Timetable For Recovery: Day-To-Day
Potential Replacement: T.J. Yeldon
Comments: Singletary has been able to practice the last two weeks, but apparently he is still not healthy enough to return to the field. His style of play could be why the Bills continue to hold him out in hopes that he can get as close to 100% as possible before returning. The Bills have a bye in Week 6 so I can't see why Singletary won't be ready for Week 7.
Davante Adams, WR Packers
Injury: Turf Toe
Timetable For Recovery: Ruled OUT for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Geronimo Allison
Comments: Turf toe is an injury that has a tendency to linger and can be hard to recover from if not given enough time. He'll be questionable for Week 7 at best until he's able to return to practice in some fashion next week.
Kenny Stills, WR Texans
Injury: Strained Hamstring, Sprained Ankle
Timetable For Recovery: Ruled OUT for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Keke Coutee, DeAndre Carter
Comments: Different week, same result for Stills who will sit out another week as he recovers from hamstring and ankle issues.
T.J. Hockenson, TE Lions
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Recovery: Questionable for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Jesse James
Comments: Hockenson has been able to practice this week without setbacks but has yet to be cleared through concussion protocol. I still expect Hockenson to get clearance, but you need to have a backup plan just in case he doesn't.
Christian Kirk, WR Cardinals
Injury: Sprained Ankle
Timetable For Recovery: Questionable for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Pharoh Cooper, KeeSean Johnson
Comments: Kirk has been able to practice in limited fashion all week, but his ankle still doesn't seem to be at 100% yet. I think there's more of a chance that he's on the field than not, but his snaps might be limited depending on how his ankle is feeling.
Tyrell Williams, WR Raiders
Injury: Sprained Foot
Timetable For Recovery: Day-To-Day, limited Wednesday
Potential Replacement: Hunter Renfrow, Darren Waller, Zay Jones
Comments: Williams was unlikely to play against the Bears in London heading into Week 5 and was inactive for that game to give him an opportunity to rest the foot. The Raiders have a Week 6 bye so it will give Williams ample time to get healthy before hopefully returning Week 7.
