The Training Room: Week 6 Injury Updates
Week 5 is being spread out a little further out in the week than we're normally accustomed to, but with COVID continuing to be an issue that is altering how the schedule is playing out. As if injuries we're bad enough to deal with, now having to deal with COVID positive players continues to be a challenge even if you don't have those players due to the schedule changes that are occurring. We had some notable names go down with some significant injuries in Week 5 and we will continue to update this list to ensure you are up to date with all the latest information.
If you are looking for updates on COVID players and when they are planning on returning, be sure to check out Jennifer Eakins' article here that keeps everyone up to date on the latest changes. On the mend will be added on Tuesday to ensure you have the information you need before waivers start to run for your leagues. UPDATED 10/17/20
Dak Prescott, QB Cowboys
Injury: Ankle Compound Fracture Dislocation
Timetable For Recovery: Out For Season
Potential Replacement: Andy Dalton
Initial Thoughts: If you saw the tackle live or saw the replay, it was not pretty watching Dak's ankle get injured. Dak was carted off and taken to the hospital where he is set to have surgery Sunday night on the ankle. Despite how bad it looked, barring any complications from the surgery itself, Dak should make a full recovery and be ready to start the next season. It's a big blow for the Cowboys who were struggling to begin with this season, and now turn to Andy Dalton to keep them fighting for the NFC East.
Melvin Gordon, RB Broncos
Injury: Illness
Timetable For Recovery: Day To Day, NOT travelling with team for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Philip Lindsay
Initial Thoughts: Gordon had been practicing in full up until late in the week when he got sick. It sounds like he's struggled to get healthy as to why he's not travelling with the team. He should be back next week but his DUI case looms large as it looks like he'll be disciplined for his actions at some point this season.
Dalvin Cook, RB Vikings
Injury: Strained Groin
Timetable For Recovery: Week To Week, Ruled OUT for Week 6
Potential Replacements: Alexander Mattison, Mike Boone
Initial Thoughts: Cook left Sunday's game against the Seahawks in the third quarter, and although he attempted to come back after missing one drive, he then did not return the rest of the game. It makes a ton of sense for the VIkings to rest Cook and give him extra time with the Vikings having a bye week in Week 7 to ensure he can get as close to full healthy as possible.
Baker Mayfield, QB Browns
Injury: Rib Injury
Timetable For Return: Questionable for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Case Keenum
Initial Thoughts: Mayfield's pain tolerance will be the biggest limiting factor this weekend against the Steelers. He could potentially re-aggravate the ribs if he's tackled wrong or if he's hit in the area that's causing pain, but Mayfield will not be missing a big divisional game for the Browns.
A.J. Green, WR Bengals
Injury: Strained Hamstring
Timetable For Return: Expected to play Week 6
Potential Replacement: Tyler Boyd, Tee Higgins, Auden Tate
Initial Thoughts: Green was listed as a full participant on Friday and is expected to play after supposedly straining his hamstring just one week ago. I'm not sure how much I would trust Green at this point given his inability to show any sort of consistency this year up until this point. Add in the fact that his hamstring could be trouble again this week and I'm looking for better options on my roster to consider.
Chris Hogan, WR Jets
Injury: High Ankle Sprain
Timetable For Recovery: At least 3 weeks
Potential Replacement: Braxton Berrios, Denzel Mims, Breshad Perriman
Initial Thoughts: What we originally thought was a knee issue is actually a high ankle sprain for Hogan. He's been placed on IR in hopes to give him enough time to fully recover, but we'll see if is enough time to get back to 100%.
D.J. Chark, WR Jaguars
Injury: Sprained Ankle
Timetable For Recovery: Questionable for Week 6
Potential Replacement: Laviska Shenault, Keelan Cole, Chris Conley
Initial Thoughts: Chark didn't practice much this week even though he was considered limited late in the week. He'll test out his ankle to make sure he can give it a go, but there is some concern just how much he'll be available this week due to the ankle issue. I'd keep close eye on his status before they face the Lions.
Diontae Johnson, WR Steelers
Injury: Strained Low Back
Timetable For Recovery: Day To Day, Ruled OUT for Week 6
Potential Replacements: Chase Claypool, James Washington, Ray-Ray McCloud
Initial Thoughts: Johnson's back didn't respond well as the week progressed so he will miss Week 6 to try and get healthier. Chase Claypool will get another shot at building on last week to show fantasy owners that it wasn't a one week fluke.
Sammy Watkins, WR Chiefs
Injury: Strained Hamstring
Timetable For Recovery: 2-4 Weeks, Ruled OUT For Week 6
Potential Replacements: Mecole Hardman, Demarcus Robinson
Initial Thoughts: Watkins continue to get banged up this season as he's dealt with a concussion already this season in addition to this newly strained hamstring. Best case scenario is that he'll miss only two games as the Chiefs haven't put him on IR which would cost him at least 3 but we'll get a better feel for his recovery as he starts ramping up back up this week.
On The Mend
Julio Jones, WR Falcons
Timetable For Recovery: Expected to play Week 6
Initial Thoughts: Jones was limited late in the week, but the Falcons did not give him an injury designation heading into the weekend which is a good sign. I would consider Jones a little more risky than some of the other players returning from hamstring related issues (Adams, Godwin), but the Falcons are looking to get their first win and could be in a much better position to do so with Jones in the lineup. If you have him, you're starting him.
Chris Godwin, WR Buccaneers
Timetable For Recovery: Expected to play Week 6
Initial Thoughts: Godwin practiced in full late in the week which is a good sign that he'll be ready to roll after missing a few weeks with a hamstring strain. There is always some risk for re-aggravations, but I would feel comfortable sticking Godwin back into lineups especially with a big game against the Packers on the line.
Desean Jackson, WR Eagles
Timetable For Recovery: Ruled OUT for Week 6
Initial Thoughts: Jackson continues to practice in limited fashion but the Eagles don't feel that he's ready just yet. He looks more ready to be available in Week 7 so for those who have him, the wait should be over soon.
John Brown, WR Bills
Timetable For Recovery: Questionable For Week 6
Initial Thoughts: Brown practiced in full on Thursday and Friday but then was listed as limited on Saturday. It's unclear if he suffered any sort of setback or if the Bills are just choosing to use that designation to help manage reps. Brown should be available Monday against the Chiefs as the Bills are going to need every offensive weapon available to keep up with the Chiefs.
Davante Adams, WR Packers
Timetable For Recovery: Practiced in full, expected to play Week 6
Initial Thoughts: Adams practiced on Monday which is a big first step in being potentially ready to play Week 6 against the bucs. We'll continue to keep an eye on his status but it looks like he'll be finally back on the field this week.
Christian McCaffrey, RB Panthers
Timetable For Recovery: Ruled OUT for Week 6
Initial Thoughts: CMC isn't ready yet and even if he were, he would still be operating at less than 100%. Mike Davis has done a really nice job of stepping in for CMC while he has been out and they will continue to lean on him until CMC comes back.
Drew Lock, QB Broncos
Timetable For Recovery: Expected To Play Week 6
Initial Thoughts: Lock is back practicing in full this week. Even though he's considered questionable, he's on the probable side of questionable as opposed to doubtful.
Leonard Fournette, RB Buccaneers
Timetable For Recovery: Questionable for Week 6
Initial Thoughts: Fournette was active last week but ended up not actually playing. Adam Schefter is reporting that Fournette will be active but he will not see his normal workload due to the ankle injury still slowing him down. Ronald Jones is the safer bet and I would feel comfortable starting him given this information.
Breshad Perriman, WR Jets
Timetable For Recovery: Questionable for Week 6
Initial Thoughts: Perriman practiced in limited fashion all week and is a game time decision. It looks like he's likely to play but is going to test things out before officially getting the green light. Perriman will have former Ravens teammate Joe Flacco throwing to him so not sure how much confidence that gives anybody when contemplating putting Perriman in your lineup.
