NFL Team Stat Explorer Glossary

Our new NFL Team Stat Explorer is ripe with information that will help you complete your research with a one-stop-shop of information. Below is a glossary of terms for each of the stats listed in the tool. One thing to keep in mind is that offensive stats shown on the defensive pages refer to what the defense allowed or faced (in the case of personnel). Similarly, defensive stats shown on the offensive tendency page refers to what the opposing offense did when the labeled defense was on the field.
Offensive and Defensive Stats
- Passing & Rushing
- Total Yards/G: total (passing and rushing) yards per game
- EPA/Play: total (passing and rushing) expected points added (EPA) per play from nflfastR
- Pass Yards/G: passing yards per game
- Pass EPA/Play: passing EPA per play (includes quarterback scrambles)
- Explosive Pass %: percent of passing plays that gain at least 15 yards
- Pass %: percent of total plays there were intended to be a pass
- PROE: pass rate over expected (as expected by the nflfastR model)
- Pressure %: percent of pass plays in which the quarterack was either hurried, hit, or sacked
- Rush Yards/G: rushing yards per game
- Rush EPA/Play: rushing EPA per play (does not include quarterback scrambles)
- Explosive Rush %: percent of running plays that gain at least 10 yards
- Scoring & Efficiency
- Points/G: total points per game
- Points/Dr: total points per drive (drives with kneeldowns not included)
- TDs/G: touchdowns per game
- FGs/G: field goals made per game
- TD:FG Ratio: ratio of touchdowns scored to field goals made
- TOs/Dr: turnovers per drive
- Int/Dr: interceptions per drive
- Fum/Dr: fumbles lost per drive
- Points/RZ Dr: points scored on drives that reach the red zone per red-zone drive
- TDs/RZ Dr: touchdowns scored on drives that reach the red zone per red-zone drive
- Play Success %: percent of plays with an EPA greater than 0
- Drive Success %: percent of drives in which the offense either gained a first down or scored
Offensive and Defensive Tendencies
- Run/Pass Splits
- 1st-Half: percent of plays that were a run when the game was in the first half
- 1st-Down: percent of plays that were a run on first down
- 2nd & Long: percent of plays that were a run on second down when the offense had at least seven yards to gain
- Power Success: percent of runs on third or fourth down with two yards or fewer to go that achieved a first down or touchdown; also includes runs on first- or second-and-goal from the two-yard-line or closer that scored a touchdown
- 2nd-Half Trailing: percent of plays that were a run when the game was in the second half and the offense was trailing
- 2nd-Half Leading: percent of plays that were a run when the game was in the second half and the offense was leading
- Run-Pass Options: percent of plays that utlized a run-pass option
- Offensive Personnel
- Single Back: percent of plays in which the offense had one running back on the field
- Empty Back: percent of plays in which the offense had zero running backs on the field
- Multi Back: percent of plays in which the offense had at least two running backs on the field
- 3+ WRs: percent of plays in which the offense had at least three wide receivers on the field
- 2+ TEs: percent of plays in which the offense had at least tight ends on the field
- Shotgun or Pistol: percent of plays in which the quarterback was lined up from the shotgun or pistol position at the time of the snap
- Pass Rush & Secondary
- Rush 3: percent of passing plays in which the defense rushed three players
- Rush 4: percent of passing plays in which the defense rushed four players
- Rush 5: percent of passing plays in which the defense rushed five players
- Rush 6+: percent of passing plays in which the defense rushed at least six players
- Edge Sacks: percent of sacks that were completed by an edge defender
- Interior Sacks: percent of sacks that were completed by an interior defender
- 2nd Level Sacks: percent of sacks that were completed by a linebacker or member of the secondary
- 4 DBs: percent of plays in which the defense had four defensive backs on the field
- 5 DBs: percent of plays in which the defense had five defensive backs on the field
- 6+ DBs: percent of plays in which the defense had at least six defensive backs on the field
- Strategy & Pace
- Play Action: percent of plays in which play action was used
- Avg. Men in Box: average number of men in the box
- 4th Down Go-for-it: percent of fourth-down plays in which the offense attempts to gain a first down
- Sec/Play: seconds elapsed between previous play ending and next play starting per play
- Sec/Dr: total seconds per drive
- No Huddle %: percent of plays in which the offense did not huddle
