Rookie: running in NFL more than just speed

Lions rookie running back Aaron Brown showed off some nice, explosive runs to the outside during minicamp, which could bolster his chances to make the team as a sixth-round pick from Texas Christian.

"Definitely speed, explosion," Brown said of his strengths. "I have a tendency just to get away from players, kind of hard to hit. I'm more of a slasher, not really cut here and jump here. I'm more of a one, two and I'm gone, and my hands are pretty solid, and my overall speed is also a plus."

One thing Brown has learned is that, unlike his college days, the NFL requires more than speed and raw talent.

"In college, really, I outran a lot of people," he said. "Just me having to set people up now, I didn't really have to do that in college. I could just outrun a lot of people and just get around the corner and go for a long run.

"I'm a little smarter, a little bit more patient. In college I was really impatient. I would just run."

Brown said he has worked on learning to exploit matchups against the defense and is becoming comfortable in the zone scheme.
