Bears WR coach Darryl Drake felt that WR Alshon Jeffery had the best hands of any wide receiver in the NFL Draft.
“I thought he did from things I saw,” said Drake. “He has a great ability to attack the ball and big hands. He really caught the ball well on the film I saw. I felt good about his hands.”
As is the case with all NFL rookies, the veteran coach knows that a learning curve will be involved.
“People think that you can come in and understand and learn systems in a short period of time,” Drake said. “But it takes years to understand exactly what to do in any given situation.
“It takes years to understand and learn coverages. In college you have so many spread offenses and things like that, and even defenses are a little different. They’re so non-traditional guys don’t get a chance to really learn. It’s going to take time. We’re going to take it one step at a time.
“Guys just have to grow into it. That’s the way it’s always been in the NFL. Some guys grow faster than others. It just depends on that particular person. Our job is to get them to grow. As time goes on, they get better and better.”
Jeffery did play in a version of the spread offense at South Carolina, so Drake's comments about the learning curve should not go unnoticed. Jeffery is going to have to get up to speed quickly if he's going to start Week 1, as many are predicting.
