At the conclusion of a competitive camp battle, kicker Dan Carpenter was declared the winner Saturday courtesy of Connor Barth's release.

According to Carpenter, whom this coaching staff has often praised for his even keel temperament, the competition had nothing to with him straightening out his issues.

"If competition [is a motivator] then it's getting to you," said Carpenter, who converted 21 of 25 field goals last season. "Even though [Barth] is gone, nothing is going to change. I'm still going to work to get better. I'm still going to do what I was doing before he was here, while he was here. And I'm going to continue to do it now that he's gone."
