On the day the Texans reduced their roster to 53 by waiving 22 players, HC Kubiak disclosed that the backup quarterback competition is even between Dan Orlovsky and Rex Grossman.
Starter Matt Schaub is nursing a sore ankle and didn’t play in Friday’s final preseason game at Tampa Bay. Grossman, a first-round pick by Chicago who signed a one-year contract with the Texans for $620,000, made the backup battle interesting when he came off the bench to ignite a 27-20 victory over the Buccaneers by completing 9-of-17 for 197 yards and two touchdowns.

As the Texans begin preparations for next Sunday’s regular-season opener against the New York Jets at Reliant Stadium, Kubiak and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will monitor the competition between Orlovsky and Grossman.
