The Eagles' roster shuffle continued yesterday when the team signed veteran TE Alex Smith to a one-year, $1 million deal three days after he was released by the Patriots.
To make room for Smith, the Eagles released TE Tony Curtis, who had signed late last month and looked impressive in Thursday night's preseason finale against the New York Jets.
Since being released, Smith said he had visited with several teams, including the New York Giants, an Eagles rival in the NFC East. But after talking to coach Andy Reid, he said, Philadelphia was the best fit.
Smith said he underwent arthroscopic ankle surgery in April.
"It was a routine procedure, but it just took a little longer to get back on my feet, and I didn't start feeling healthy until about the last two weeks," Smith said.
