Texans WR Jacoby Jones is expected to plead guilty Tuesday to DWI and enter the Harris County District Attorney's DIVERT program for a year, said his lawyer, Chip Lewis.
“It's a two-fold benefit,” Lewis said. “First, it's a great opportunity for (Jones) to put this in a positive light. He's going to do several public service announcements. And second, it illustrates to the community that this was just an aberration. He's deserving of this agreement.”
The program, which began Aug. 1, is a contract between the district attorney's office and qualifying defendants charged with their first driving while intoxicated offenses. The agreement allows a defendant to plead guilty to a judge, then have the case reset for a year. In that year, the defendant would go through alcohol education classes and have an ignition interlock device put on his or her car.
Some defendants also have more stringent requirements, including wearing alcohol detecting devices and keeping interlock devices in their homes for regular checks, said Assistant District Attorney Roger Bridgwater, the program's architect.
