Patriots rookie WR Julian Edelman led all players with eight catches for 98 yards in his NFL debut, but the loss to the Jets soured the experience.

Edelman became the starter after Wes Welker was a late scratch because of a knee injury. He earned praise for his performance but addressed what he learned in his first NFL game.

“The pace of the game’s a lot faster,’’ Edelman said. “We’ve got to watch tape, and I’ll learn a lot more then. I know I have a long way to go, so we’ll see.’’

Edelman, who was drafted in the seventh round out of Kent State, where he was a quarterback, said part of what he needs to improve is “looking and seeing what’s out there. As a receiver, you’ve got to be able to look at the coverage, get your stance, right formation, and all that kind of stuff. I’m not where I want to be.’’
