When Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington left Sunday'...

When Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington left Sunday's game with an injury to his throwing shoulder in the third quarter, it created a domino effect.

The Dolphins chose to insert Chad Henne, listed as the third quarterback, rather than Pat White, the nominal backup on game day. That meant that neither White nor Pennington could return because Henne had come into the game before the start of the fourth quarter.

Pennington was injured on the fourth play of the second half when Chargers linebacker Kevin Burnett threw him to the ground after an incompletion on third-and-7 from the Miami 40 yard line. Right tackle Vernon Carey appeared to be the culprit on the knockdown.

Pennington has undergone two major surgeries on that right shoulder.
