What Chargers HC Turner is looking forward to is having a healthy team, which he expects – with the exception of nose tackle Jamal Williams (out for the season) and center Nick Hardwick (out for several more weeks) – after a week with no game and then another week to prepare for hosting the Broncos on Oct. 19.
Linebacker Shawne Merriman (groin) is expected to be sufficiently healed by Oct. 19 for him to start and play significantly more than a handful of snaps, as he has the past two games. Also, defensive lineman Travis Johnson, out the past three games with a groin strain, is expected to resume practicing in a limited manner this week and to play against the Broncos.
This week, the Chargers will also likely rest linebacker Stephen Cooper (knee) and center Scott Mruczkowski (knee).
Turner said Castillo (arm), defensive end Jacques Cesaire (calf), wide receiver Malcom Floyd (shoulder), Merriman, nose tackle Ogemdi Nwagbuo (ankle), linebacker Shaun Phillips (calf) and tight end Kris Wilson (wrist) will likely be limited in how much they do during practices Wednesday and Thursday before the Chargers take the weekend off.
“In all the cases I would expect them to be ready to practice when we get going next week on Denver,” Turner said.
