Scouting report

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Indianapolis Colts

Antonio Gibson did a little bit of everything last week as Washington figures out the best role for the former starter. Gibson ran the ball 10 times for 59 yards, caught three of four targets for 18 yards and a touchdown, and returned three kickoffs for 78 yards. Gibson is an intriguing option in leagues where return yards count, but his confusing role on offense makes him a shaky play in most leagues. Gibson draws an OK matchup against the Colts this week. He should be viewed as a low-end RB3/flex play for Week 8.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Green Bay Packers

Brian Robinson was Washington's starter last week as Antonio Gibson moved into an odd role. Gibson ran the ball five times for 35 yards and saw four targets, catching three passes for 18 yards. He played on 26% of the offensive snaps, which is a season low for him. Gibson was already splitting touches with J.D. McKissic, and now with Robinson in the mix, there's not a whole lot left for Gibson to do. He doesn't really have a defined role in this offense, and therefore it's hard to trust him in fantasy. He's not much more than a desperation flex play in Week 7 against the Packers.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Chicago Bears

Antonio Gibson appears to be on his way out of touches in Washington's backfield. Brian Robinson returned in Week 5, and led Washington's backfield in carries despite playing the fewest amount of snaps among the three running backs. Gibson ran the ball just three times for six yards while finishing 3-33 on four targets. Washington likes Robinson as its primary runner, and we know how much the team likes J.D. McKissic as a receiving threat. So that leaves Gibson to pick up the scraps, which may not be much. Gibson will get a favorable matchup against the Bears this week, though. For now, we like him as a low-end RB3 or flex play in Week 6.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Tennessee Titans

Antonio Gibson ran 13 times for 49 yards last week, adding three receptions for 14 yards on three targets. Gibson has been OK so far for Washington, averaging 68.6 scrimmage yards per game with two total touchdowns. That usage could go down starting this week, though. Brian Robinson was officially designated to return to practice and coach Ron Rivera said he "anticipates" him being available in Week 5. Throughout training camp, reports seemed to indicate Robinson was pushing for the starting job before getting shot in an apparent robbery attempt. If Robinson does play, it'll be interesting to see just how Washington plans to split touches between him, Gibson and J.D. McKissic. We wouldn't expect Robinson to have a huge role in his first game back, but it's definitely a concern for Gibson managers moving forward. In Game 5, Gibson should be a solid RB3 or flex play in a good matchup against the Titans.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Dallas Cowboys

Antonio Gibson had an OK outing last week, rushing 12 times for 38 yards with a touchdown while adding one catch for two yards. Gibson is off to a decent start as he's RB13 in half-PPR scoring. He's not gaining many yards, but he had a productive game in Week 1 and then scored a touchdown in Week 2 and Week 3. He's averaging just shy of 50 scrimmage yards per game, which is around what we have projected for him this week. Fantasy owners will hope he either breaks off a big run or finds the end zone for a third straight game. His rushing woes could continue as he gets a fairly tough matchup against the Cowboys. He should be viewed as a lower-end RB2 play in Week 4.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Antonio Gibson saw similar volume on the ground in Week 2 as he did in Week 1, but he wasn't as efficient, rushing 14 times for 28 yards. His role as a receiver dropped, though, as he went from a career-high eight targets to four, finishing 2-13 as a receiver. Thankfully for fantasy owners, he managed to score a touchdown. It's been a decent start for Gibson, who looks like a fairly reliable RB2. That's what he should be viewed as moving into a decent Week 3 matchup vs. the Eagles, who have given up the seventh-most fantasy points to running backs this year.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Detroit Lions

Antonio Gibson was heavily involved in Washington's offense in Week 1. He had 14 carries for 58 yards, and was actually utilized out of the backfield with eight targets, finishing 7-72. Gibson's eight targets are a career high for him, which is somewhat surprising for the converted receiver. It's a promising sign for 2022 under new QB Carson Wentz. Gibson will look to keep his production up in a favorable Week 2 matchup vs. the Lions. Based on his Week 1 production, and his Week 2 matchup, there aren't many downsides to Gibson this week. He should be viewed as a solid RB1 play.
