2022 Fantasy Upside
Antonio Gibson topped 1,000 scrimmage yards for the second-straight season, while showing improvements in rush yards per game (64.8) and receiving yards per game (18.4). Despite the presence of J.D. McKissic, Gibson finished 4th in total touches among running backs a year ago as he managed to have a strong role as a receiving back with 42 receptions. Gibson’s been a solid option since joining the league two years ago, finishing as RB13 in 2020, and RB12 in 2021. He’ll remain the starting back for Washington in 2022, and he’ll be playing behind a top 12 offensive line, according to 4for4’s Justin Edwards.
2022 Fantasy Downside
While Gibson is in line to be RB1 on the depth chart, Washington brought back McKissic this year and also added Brian Robinson Jr. in the third round of the draft. When Gibson entered the league, fantasy owners imagined a Christian McCaffrey type role from Ron Rivera, but instead, McKissic has eaten into the majority of the passing-down work with 123 receptions the past two seasons compared to Gibson’s 96. And while Robinson may not have a huge role, he’ll likely see enough playing time to eat into Gibson’s touches.
2022 Bottom Line
Gibson has high-end RB2 potential, as he’s shown the past two seasons, but we have him as a lower-end RB2 in our preseason rankings because the workload concerns are real. Even though Gibson saw the 4th-most touches among running backs last year, he was RB18 in average scoring per game in half-PPR. If you take away those touches, he’ll need to be much more efficient to not drop even more in scoring. A lot hinges on how coach Rivera plans to utilize his three running backs. If Gibson remains the bell-cow, then he could end up being a steal in the 5th or 6th round.
