WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Antonio Gibson appeared to be on his way to a reduced role this season until the unfortunate shooting of Brian Robinson. Robinson has since been placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, meaning he's out at least four weeks. In that span, we'd expect Gibson to go back to what he was doing a season ago as the lead back. Gibson averaged around 80 scrimmage yards per game last season, doing most of his work as a runner. Despite being a converted receiver, Gibson hasn't really done much out of the passing game as Washington likes to utilize J.D. McKissic for that role. For Week 1, Gibson draws a decent matchup against the Jaguars. We'd expect around 15 carries for him, with not much of a role as a receiver. He should be viewed as a low-end RB1 play for now.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Antonio Gibson topped 1,000 scrimmage yards for the second-straight season, while showing improvements in rush yards per game (64.8) and receiving yards per game (18.4). Despite the presence of J.D. McKissic, Gibson finished 4th in total touches among running backs a year ago as he managed to have a strong role as a receiving back with 42 receptions. Gibson’s been a solid option since joining the league two years ago, finishing as RB13 in 2020, and RB12 in 2021. He’ll remain the starting back for Washington in 2022, and he’ll be playing behind a top 12 offensive line, according to 4for4’s Justin Edwards.

2022 Fantasy Downside
While Gibson is in line to be RB1 on the depth chart, Washington brought back McKissic this year and also added Brian Robinson Jr. in the third round of the draft. When Gibson entered the league, fantasy owners imagined a Christian McCaffrey type role from Ron Rivera, but instead, McKissic has eaten into the majority of the passing-down work with 123 receptions the past two seasons compared to Gibson’s 96. And while Robinson may not have a huge role, he’ll likely see enough playing time to eat into Gibson’s touches.

2022 Bottom Line
Gibson has high-end RB2 potential, as he’s shown the past two seasons, but we have him as a lower-end RB2 in our preseason rankings because the workload concerns are real. Even though Gibson saw the 4th-most touches among running backs last year, he was RB18 in average scoring per game in half-PPR. If you take away those touches, he’ll need to be much more efficient to not drop even more in scoring. A lot hinges on how coach Rivera plans to utilize his three running backs. If Gibson remains the bell-cow, then he could end up being a steal in the 5th or 6th round.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

UPDATE: Gibson has been placed on the team's COVID/Reserve list so he's out this week. Jaret Patterson should get the bulk of the touches in Gibson's absence.

Antonio Gibson was active last week after entering the matchup with a questionable tag, but he didn't end up playing a lot as the game got out of hand fast. Thankfully for fantasy owners, Gibson was able to finish with 58 scrimmage yards and a touchdown before exiting. He's questionable again heading into Week 17 as he deals with an apparently new hip injury (he was previously dealing with a toe injury). He was limited Wednesday before being downgraded Thursday with a DNP. He's been injured all year, so we'd expect him to eventually be active Sunday, but his health will be worth monitoring throughout the week. If he is active, he gets a favorable matchup vs. the Eagles who have given up the 10th-most average fantasy points to running backs. Gibson finished with 65 scrimmage yards and a touchdown when he played the Eagles just a few weeks ago, including a six-reception performance. Assuming he's healthy enough to play, Gibson will be a solid RB2 play in Week 17.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Dallas Cowboys

Antonio Gibson got off to a strong start last week, and then he suffered an injury (toe). While he did return to the game, he wasn't as effective. Gibson finished with 15 carries for 26 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Thankfully, at least for PPR owners, with J.D. McKissic on IR, Gibson was utilized as a receiver, catching 6-of-7 targets for 39 yards. Gibson has been sidelined from practice so far this week after suffering his toe injury, and on a shortened week (they played on Tuesday), there's certainly a chance he's unable to play. If he does play, he should be viewed as a lower-end RB1. He, unfortunately, draws a tough matchup vs. the Cowboys this week, who have given up the seventh-fewest average fantasy points to running backs. Gibson struggled against this defense just a few weeks ago, totaling 41 scrimmage yards on 12 touches (with a fumble). But with McKissic out, Gibson should see plenty of touches this week, assuming he's active.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Philadelphia Eagles

Antonio Gibson struggled last week, rushing just 10 times for 36 yards, and catching two passes for five yards. Gibson also fumbled in the third quarter, and was benched afterwards as he didn't get a touch after the fumble. Jonathan Williams and Jaret Patterson were each used in his place, and Williams even scored a touchdown. Washington will likely need to rely on Gibson this week as their quarterback situation is a mess, but that could also mean the Eagles focus all their attention on the running back giving him little room to operate. The good news for Gibson is the Eagles have given up the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing running backs, including the 6th-most receptions. If J.D. McKissic sits out again, which is possible as he hasn't practiced this week, then Gibson could see some more targets out the backfield. We like Gibson as a low-end RB1 play this week vs. Philadelphia.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Dallas Cowboys

As expected, with J.D. McKissic sidelined, Antonio Gibson was able to shine last week. He carried the ball 23 times for 88 yards and finished 5-23-1 on six targets. In the four games since Washington's bye week, Gibson has averaged 27.3 touches per game, quite the jump from his 16.0 average before the bye. It's hard to imagine Gibson keeping that pace up, but he should be looking at around 20 touches moving forward. He'll unfortunately draw a tough matchup this week against the Cowboys, who have given up the fourth-fewest average fantasy points to running backs. And there's a chance McKissic returns from injury (concussion) this week, which will surely eat into Gibson's touches. Still, we like Gibson as a solid RB1 play in Week 14.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Las Vegas Raiders

Antonio Gibson saw 36 touches last week, which is 10 more than his previous career high. He was productive with those touches as well, finishing with 146 scrimmage yards (111 rushing, 35 receiving). The converted wide receiver also finally saw action as a receiver, matching his career high with seven targets (he caught all of them). We can likely expect Gibson to see more work as a receiver moving forward following an injury to pass specialist J.D. McKissic, who also vultured two touchdowns last week. Gibson is trending in the right direction following a slight slump in the middle of the year. Expect another week of high production as Gibson draws a favorable matchup against the Raiders, who have given up the 4th-most average fantasy points to running backs. With McKissic out of the picture, Gibson is in line for a lot of work in a good matchup. We like him as a top-10 running back play for Week 13.
