WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. New Orleans Saints

Antonio Gibson had a solid game last week, finishing with 14 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown. He also caught both of his two targets for 12 yards. Gibson is averaging 16.8 touches for around 90 yards per game and has scored in consecutive weeks. We expected the converted receiver to be more involved in the passing game, but Washington really likes J.D. McKissic in that role. Gibson could struggle a bit this week against the Saints, who have allowed the third-fewest rushing yards to running backs this season. New Orleans has almost allowed as many receiving yards to backs (188) as rushing yards (203) this season. Gibson is also still dealing with a shin injury that held him out of practice early in the week. Since he played last week, we'd expect him to play again this week where he'll be a lower-end RB2 play against the Saints.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Atlanta Falcons

Antonio Gibson struggled on the ground last week, finishing with 31 yards on 12 carries. But he had a 71-yard receiving touchdown that saved his production. He nearly had a second receiving touchdown, but he dropped a wide-open pass. Gibson showed up on Washington's injury report with a shin issue, forcing him to miss Thursday's practice after participating Wednesday. It's an odd issue, and something to monitor heading into Week 4. Assuming Gibson is healthy enough to play, he draws a favorable matchup against a bad Falcons team. We're projecting a near 100-yard scrimmage game for him, making him a solid RB1 play in Week 4.

UPDATE: Gibson returned to practice in a limited session on Friday. While he's listed as questionable, coach Ron Rivera said he is “pretty confident” that Gibson will play in Week 4.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Buffalo Bills

Antonio Gibson owners watched in horror as J.D. McKissic not only returned to his role of hogging all of the backfield targets but he also vultured a goal-line touchdown in Week 2. While Gibson's numbers haven't been what owners have wanted, there's still plenty of positives to take away from his season so far. He's ninth in total touches among running backs, and he's playing well with a 4.8 ypc. If he got the goal-line touchdown instead of McKissic in Week 2, owners wouldn't be as upset. Having said all of that, there's a chance Gibson struggles again in Week 3 as he draws a tough Bills matchup. Buffalo has allowed the third-fewest fantasy points to RBs so far this season, including the fifth-fewest rushing yards and second-fewest receiving yards to the position all while giving up no touchdowns. We still have Gibson as a lower-end RB1 in Week 3, though.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New York Giants

Antonio Gibson had a solid Week 1 game, finishing with 20 carries for 90 yards while catching 3-18 on five targets. He's still splitting duties with J.D. McKissic as Gibson finished playing 65% of the offensive snaps in Week 1 compared to McKissic's 36% (Jaret Patterson played four snaps). But 23 touches is more than enough to make an impact. The only real downside to Gibson's Week 1 game was the fact he didn't find the endzone. We're projecting another heavy workload for Gibson in Week 2, especially in a favorable matchup against the Giants. New York gave up 165 rushing yards to the Broncos in Week 1. Gibson should be viewed as a low-end RB1 play in Week 2.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Antonio Gibson will look to build off of his successful rookie season in a Week 1 matchup against the Chargers. It'll be interesting to see if Washington gives Gibson more playing time as a receiving threat after giving so many receptions to JD McKissic a year ago. This will be relevant in Week 1 because Gibson faces a Chargers defense that gave up the seventh-most receptions to RBs last year. Even if Gibson doesn't get his receptions, he should still be a strong play in Week 1. He showed last year he's more than capable of getting things done on the ground as a traditional runner. We like him as a low-end RB1 or a high-end RB2 against the Chargers.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Antonio Gibson had a solid rookie season, finishing with 1,042 scrimmage yards and 11 touchdowns in 14 games. He did this despite averaging just 43% of the offensive snaps in games he played. Gibson finished the year as the 12th-highest scoring fantasy RB (half-PPR) and has room for improvement if his role gets expanded. ESPN’s John Keim said Washington would “like to expand his game to have him run more routes,” which would be a huge boost. Gibson played receiver in college, but only had 36 receptions as a rookie. An increase in receiving stats could put Gibson into the top 10 scorers at RB this year.

Fantasy Downside
J.D. McKissic led all running backs with 110 targets last season, finishing with 80 receptions for 589 receiving yards. McKissic ate up a lot of the targets fantasy owners expected Gibson to receive, and with him returning this season we could see that happening again. And while Gibson was productive last season, a lot of his success came against a bad defense. He tore up the Cowboys twice for a combined 243 yards, which amounted to 30.57% of his total rushing yards (they were also his only two 100+ yard rushing games).

2021 Bottom Line
Everything is pointing to an improved season for Gibson, who already finished as a top 12 scorer at his position as a rookie. We’re expecting an increased role, mostly in the passing game, which should lead to more overall production. Gibson is no longer a sleeper option you can pick up past the fifth round. Instead, his ADP is in the early second round, which makes sense given his opportunity. Gibson has a chance to enter the top 10 scorers at running back this year.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Philadelphia Eagles

Antonio Gibson returned from injury last week, but he appeared to be fairly limited as he played on just 30% of the offensive snaps. It's his lowest snap count of the season outside of the game he got injured. He was still fairly productive, rushing for 61 yards on 10 carries while adding three receptions for eight yards. He's still listed on Washington's injury report with a toe injury, and was left out of practice all week. We'd expect him to play in a big game, especially since he was active last week. He gets a somewhat tough matchup against the Eagles (No. 12 aFPA), and his injury will likely limit him somewhat. He won't be the stellar RB1 play we saw earlier in the season, but we like him a solid RB2 in Week 17.
