MIN RB Cam Akers - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs Kansas City Chiefs

Cam Akers could be a thorn in the side of Alexander Mattison owners as time goes on for this season. He saw five rushes and two receptions.

We have him ranked at RB38 so there are plenty of other options out there. But, he's an intriguing stash even if you don't need him in Week 5.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. San Francisco 49ers

Cam Akers was supposed to be a "central piece" of this offense. Our very own John Daigle, rightly, pointed out on Twitter that Akers was actually out-touched by Kyren Williams when the game was close. Akers came in and finished with 11 carries over the last nine minutes of the game to ice it for the Rams, but only managed four routes.

We have him ranked as RB36 in a very tough matchup. This whole situation is a disaster. If the Rams pick a running back and stick with them, it's a valuable role. But, it didn't look that way in Week 1. He's startable in the flex, but that's about it at this point.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Seattle Seahawks

Cam Akers will look to pick up where he left off last season. Down the stretch, among rushers that saw the volume he did, Akers led the league in rushes inside the 10 and Rush Yards Over Expected. Sean McVay said that Akers will be a "central figure" in the offense in 2023. His first opportunity will come against a Seahawks defense that allowed 10 different running backs to cross 100 yards from scrimmage last season. He's a solid RB2 this week in all scoring formats.

LAR RB Cam Akers - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Cam Akers has shown promise as a running back for the Rams. Despite a modest 2021 season where he only played one game due to an Achilles injury, Akers bounced back in 2022 with a solid performance. He rushed for 786 yards and scored 7 touchdowns in 15 games, averaging 52.4 yards per game. His strong finish down the stretch in 2022 combined with Sean McVay's public statements about Akers' involvement is a testament to his potential. With this Rams' offense, Akers has the opportunity to be a significant contributor in the 2023 season.

Fantasy Downside
The main concern with Akers is his injury history. His 2021 season was almost entirely wiped out due to an Achilles injury, and while he bounced back in 2022, the risk of re-injury is always a concern. He'll also have to hold off Kyren Williams and Zach Evans if he's going to be a true workhorse.

2023 Bottom Line
Akers is a high-risk, high-reward player for the 2023 fantasy season. His injury history is a concern, but his demonstrated ability to perform at a high level when healthy is promising. We currently have him ranked as RB23 for 2023. He's worth considering as an RB2 with the potential to perform as an RB1 if things break right.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

After finding his footing over the past few weeks, Cam Akers finally exploded with a monster 23-118-3 performance. This was Akers’ best performance since 2020 rushing for over 100 yards for just the third time in his career. Akers has done everything he can to earn this starting job for 2023, and with another effort like this over the final two weeks, he could be in line for a great season next year.

This week Akers gets another strong matchup vs. a weak Chargers run defense. This season the Chargers have allowed the second-most rushing yards and the seventh-most rushing touchdowns on the year. This includes 100-yard games from Derrick Henry (21-104-1), Josh Jacobs (26-144-1), James Conner (25-120), Kenneth Walker (23-168-2), Nick Chubb (17-134-2), Dameon Pierce (14-131-1), and James Robinson (17-100). Now with the Rams finding their groove and Akers turning into a workhorse, he’s a solid RB2 in a plus matchup in Week 17.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Denver Broncos

The lone bright spot of the Rams’ offense over the past few weeks has been Cam Akers. In Week 15, Akers had a season-high 65 yards rushing and a season-high 35 yards receiving vs. the Packers. This was the first time all season that Akers has gone over 70 total yards in a game. Akers looked strong on his touches rushing for 5.4 yards per carry. This marked just the second time all year he was over five yards per carry in a game. Akers strong performance last week was the third straight game where Akers saw at least 13 touches. It is clear that the Rams are leaning on Akers down the stretch as he out-touched fellow running back Kyren Williams 15-2.

This week the Rams will look to lean on Akers again vs. a tough Broncos defense. The Broncos have been more susceptible on the ground allowing the 13th most rushing yards to running backs this season. This includes allowing at least 90 total yards to a running back in four of their last five games. Overall, Akers doesn’t offer much upside in this struggling offense, but with his uptick in touches, he is now on the flex radar in plus matchups rest of the season.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Green Bay Packers

After a few weeks of splitting the backfield, it is clear that the Rams view Cam Akers as their feature back down the stretch. A week after seeing a season-high 17 carries, Akers dominated carries again in Week 14 receiving 12 of the 16 attempts vs. the Raiders. Akers didn’t find that much success only rushing for 42 yards in the game, but this role is great news for his long-term outlook. A bigger issue for Akers is he continues to split work in the passing game. Akers only ran a route on 10 of 41 Baker Mayfield drop-backs. This low route participation led to only one target in the game. Even though the role that Akers plays does have his arrow pointing up long-term, it will make it tough to trust him as anything more than a desperation flex play as the team continues to struggle on offense for the remainder of the 2022 season.
