LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

It seems like the Rams’ backfield changes on a weekly basis, and Week 13 was no different. A week after Kyren Williams out-touched Cam Akers 14 to 8, it was Akers that took over the lead-back role. Last week Akers dominated work seeing 18 touches to just three for Williams. Outside of just the touches, Akers did see extended work in overall usage. Akers paced the running backs in routes with 19 and played a season-high 72% of the snaps. The increase in usage immediately showed up in the stat sheet as he eclipsed 60 yards rushing for just the third time all year, and the second time in the last three weeks.

Moving forward it looks like the Rams will give Akers every chance to showcase why he should be the starter in 2023. This week he gets a Raiders DST that has allowed the fifth most fantasy points to running backs so far in 2022. This includes allowing at least 15 PPR fantasy points to a running back in every game since their Week 6 bye. Overall, it is hard to trust this offense, but if Akers sees a similar workload on Thursday night, he should end up firmly on the RB2 map for Week 14.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Seattle Seahawks

The good news for Cam Akers is the release of Darrell Henderson has solidified his role as the lead ball carrier for the Rams. The bad news is due to the loss of his quarterback, top two wide receivers, and a banged-up offensive line this new lead back role won’t amount to much for the rest of the 2022 season. Akers has responded with two of his three best rushing games from an efficiency standpoint over the last two weeks. In those games, Akers has gone over four yards per carry for just the second and third time all season long. This does bode well for Akers from a dynasty perspective as he could reclaim that starting job with a strong performance down the stretch. The issue is for this season it will be impossible to trust Akers unless starting quarterback Matthew Stafford returns. That’s why for Week 13, it is best to fade him for the time being.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Kansas City Chiefs

In a surprising move, the Rams released not Cam Akers, but Darrell Henderson earlier this week. This should open things up for Akers as he now looks to be the clear early downs back for the Rams moving forward. However, it is important to point out that the Rams will still rotate backs as rookie Kyren Williams looks to already have solidified his role as the passing game back for the Rams. This will make it tough to trust Akers in a potentially bad game script vs. the Chiefs while playing with his third-string quarterback.

Moving forward, Akers’ arrow is pointing up as his 14 carries in Week 11 were his second most of the season. More importantly, his 61 yards rushing on those 14 carries tied his season high and was just the second time all season he was over four yards per carry in a game. Akers is worth a speculative add and/or hold to see if Matthew Stafford will return at some point this season to right the ship down the stretch.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Carolina Panthers

Cam Akers had a paltry 33 yards on 13 carries last week in an ugly loss to the Cowboys. He’s had only one game with double-digit fantasy points this year and the Rams’ rushing attack has been very disappointing overall this season.

Akers has a nice matchup this week against a Panthers defense that ranks 23rd in aFPA to opposing running backs this year. If he’s going to get back on track, this would be a good week to do it. Still, Darrell Henderson gets the passing down work and with limited upside, Akers should be considered a fringe RB2 option at best in most leagues.

Update: Akers is out, so be sure to get him out of your lineup.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Dallas Cowboys

After the world went a blaze in Week 1, Cam Akers has slowly reclaimed his lead back role for the Rams. In Weeks 2-4, Akers has out-carried Darrell Henderson 35-21. On the surface, his 3.4 yards per carry vs. Henderson’s 4.3 looks problematic, but Akers has looked like the better runner. Akers has a higher yards after contact per attempt and has forced five missed tackles vs. Henderson’s zero over this stretch. Akers has looked a bit more explosive with three runs of 10-plus yards vs. just one for Henderson. More importantly, Akers is getting the high-value touches as he has out-touched Henderson 8-4 in the red zone and has seen both carries inside the five.

This week Akers has a big opportunity as he faces off vs. a weaker Cowboys run defense. This season Dallas has allowed the 11th most rushing yards to running backs so far in 2022. This includes strong performances from Leonard Fournette (21-127), Saquon Barkley (14-81-1), and a combined (27-137) from the Commanders in Week 4. This matchup along with his increasing usage makes Akers a rock-solid RB2 in Week 5.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at San Francisco 49ers

After being held to just three attempts in Week 1, Cam Akers has double-digit touches in two straight weeks, and even found the end zone on Sunday against the Cardinals. He finished the game with 61 yards on 12 carries, and split snaps with Darrell Henderson 50/50, his highest snap count of the season. Akers is trending up.

This week, Akers faces a 49ers defense that has been pretty good this year. They’ve allowed two rushing touchdowns to opposing running backs, but held the Broncos’ team to just 3.1 yards per carry on Sunday, and the Seahawks to 2.6 the week before. Expect a tough day for both offenses and Akers should be considered too risky for anything more than a deep flex play in most leagues.

LAR RB Cam Akers - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Arizona Cardinals

A week after we thought it was clear Cam Akers was well behind Darrell Henderson in the pecking order, Akers out-touched Henderson 17-10. Henderson did find the end-zone which propped up his fantasy day, but Akers was clearly the lead back. Long term, those TDs should start going to Akers as they saw even usage in the red zone. Akers even saw some usage in the pass game getting two targets turning them into 18 yards. From strictly a usage standpoint it is clear the Rams want Akers to be the guy. That being said, it seems like the Achilles injury is still holding him back which means we might not see his ceiling until the second half of 2022. If you’re a 2-0 team looking for depth it might not be a bad idea to send offers to the Cam Akers manager especially if they are 0-2 and looking for wins now.

As for the matchup in Week 3, Akers does have a good one vs. the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals have allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to the running back position through Week 2. This includes a big day from Clyde Edwards-Heliare on just 10 touches. The situation in Los Angeles is hard to predict, but the plus matchup and increased usage makes Akers an RB2/flex in Week 3.
