DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Patriots

It was a welcomed sight to see CeeDee Lamb score and catch four passes after doing neither since at least Week 2. The issue for Lamb and teammate Amari Cooper is that QB Dak Prescott has been efficient with his passing, leading to fewer attempts but a bevy of points. A road matchup with the 11th-best team against wideouts using aFPA could lead to more passing without the quick results. Still, Lamb’s upside is capped by the Cowboys’ weekly positive game scripts.

DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs Giants

Nothing gold can stay as we found out with CeeDee Lamb. His receptions and receiving yards have dropped each of the past two weeks but that has more to do with the passing game’s efficiency than anything else. The New York Giants rank 25th in aFPA which represents Lamb’s easiest matchup since Week 1. Lamb went for 7-104-1 that game and has a chance to rebound after two disappointing games. He is safely entrenched as a WR1/2 this week.

DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs Carolina Panthers

Week 3 was the first time CeeDee Lamb was not a focal point of the offense and that’s okay. Lamb still produced 9.5 full-PPR points on four total touches and stands to do the most damage at the position with Amari Cooper managing a rib injury. Carolina is 17th in aFPA and just lost CB Jaycee Horn because of foot surgery. It should not take long for the Cowboys to air out the ball with the Panthers an elite rushing defense entering the final week of the first quarter of the season.

DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Eagles

The loss of Michael Gallup allowed CeeDee Lamb to log 60 of 62 snaps on offense during the Cowboys' Week 2 win at Los Angeles. Week 3 is Lamb’s first chance to take on the Eagles with Dak Prescott under center. Lamb had seven catches for 92 yards in 2020 against Philly but is in store of that stat line over one contest. Teammate Amari Cooper is battling bruised ribs and runs the risk of missing Week 3. That would put all the spotlights on Lamb offensively and from a defensive viewpoint. Philly entered 2021 27th against the receiver position in schedule-adjusted positional defensive rankings, but has held Atlanta and San Francisco’s top two receiving options to under 175 yards combined with one touchdown. The Lamb/Cooper combo is better than the other offerings the Eagles slowed down, but the Eagles secondary has done their part so far. Lamb is positioned 4th in 4for4’s wide receiver rankings.

DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs Chargers

Seven catches for 104 yards and a touchdown constitutes a great fantasy game, but CeeDee Lamb left points on the field. Multiple drops cost him an even bigger night against Tampa Bay. With Michael Gallup out for the next three-plus weeks, Lamb and teammate Amari Cooper are going to see increased targets and increased Air Yards. Lamb had 15 targets in Week 1 and should see a similar target share against another strong secondary in the Chargers.

DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Buccaneers
Despite a less than ideal Week 1 opponent, CeeDee Lamb has a solid matchup to open the 2021 season. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense ranks 17th in schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed to wide receivers. Lamb will see the majority of his snaps in the slot where he will square off against Sean Murphy-Bunting. Murphy-Bunting ranked 68th in Pro Football Focus’s cornerback rankings, worst among the three starters for the Bucs. It should not be surprising to see the Cowboys target Lamb’s matchup early and often against one of the better defensive front-sevens in the NFL.

DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

There is not much more CeeDee Lamb could have done to impress during his rookie season. The 22-year old was targeted at least five times per game in 15 of 16 contests and averaged 63.5 yards per game. Lamb also started to usurp Amari Cooper in fantasy points per snap in standard and PPR formats, especially Weeks 14 on. In totality, Lamb led the Cowboys' receivers with 0.19 standard and 0.29 PPR points per snap. It is tough to not be concerned about his snap percentage. His range of snaps played bottomed out at 46.8% Week 8 and topped 70% twice with Dak Prescott at quarterback. In the four weeks Prescott started and finished, Lamb played at least 70% of snaps three times. A contributor to the fluctuation was the Cowboys' injured offensive line. It did not take long for the line to pile up injuries and require extra help against opponent pass rushes, keeping Lamb off the field on passing downs. A renewal of health across the Cowboys' offense opens opportunities for Lamb.

Fantasy Downside

It may seem minuscule at first, but Lamb averaged one reception and 11.19 receiving yards per game fewer than Cooper. If you include rushing yards, the average shrinks about six yards, but over 16 games that is sizable. Will Lamb be given the opportunity to top Cooper’s production with only four games played alongside Prescott? Can Lamb be trusted to have a similar rushing floor, especially since he only reached double-digit rushing yards in four games (all without Dak)?

With the receiving trio and Dak healthy, Lamb had the fewest Air Yards and Expected Touchdowns (xTD) according to the 4for4 Air Yards App. Lamb’s Average Depth of Target (aDOT) was tied with Cooper at 9.3 yards, 7.5 yards behind Michael Gallup. Cooper was averaging 23 more yards on four more receptions and 5.8 more targets than Lamb over that same span. Lamb is being drafted in the similar wide receiver range as Cooper despite less production with and without Prescott. Lamb’s aDOT did lead to a slightly larger market share of targets over Gallup, but the dynamic rookie was set to have a specific role in the offense.

2021 Bottom Line

Lamb made an immediate impact as a rookie before injuries derailed the Cowboys' offense. Despite a drop-off in QB talent, Lamb was a trusted option in the offense and has a role that is less affected by personnel changes than other players. He is being drafted as a borderline WR1 in fantasy, and 2021 may be the last season in which Lamb is not the undisputed WR1 in Dallas.
