DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

There is not much more CeeDee Lamb could have done to impress during his rookie season. The 22-year old was targeted at least five times per game in 15 of 16 contests and averaged 63.5 yards per game. Lamb also started to usurp Amari Cooper in fantasy points per snap in standard and PPR formats, especially Weeks 14 on. In totality, Lamb led the Cowboys' receivers with 0.19 standard and 0.29 PPR points per snap. It is tough to not be concerned about his snap percentage. His range of snaps played bottomed out at 46.8% Week 8 and topped 70% twice with Dak Prescott at quarterback. In the four weeks Prescott started and finished, Lamb played at least 70% of snaps three times. A contributor to the fluctuation was the Cowboys' injured offensive line. It did not take long for the line to pile up injuries and require extra help against opponent pass rushes, keeping Lamb off the field on passing downs. A renewal of health across the Cowboys' offense opens opportunities for Lamb.

Fantasy Downside

It may seem minuscule at first, but Lamb averaged one reception and 11.19 receiving yards per game fewer than Cooper. If you include rushing yards, the average shrinks about six yards, but over 16 games that is sizable. Will Lamb be given the opportunity to top Cooper’s production with only four games played alongside Prescott? Can Lamb be trusted to have a similar rushing floor, especially since he only reached double-digit rushing yards in four games (all without Dak)?

With the receiving trio and Dak healthy, Lamb had the fewest Air Yards and Expected Touchdowns (xTD) according to the 4for4 Air Yards App. Lamb’s Average Depth of Target (aDOT) was tied with Cooper at 9.3 yards, 7.5 yards behind Michael Gallup. Cooper was averaging 23 more yards on four more receptions and 5.8 more targets than Lamb over that same span. Lamb is being drafted in the similar wide receiver range as Cooper despite less production with and without Prescott. Lamb’s aDOT did lead to a slightly larger market share of targets over Gallup, but the dynamic rookie was set to have a specific role in the offense.

2021 Bottom Line

Lamb made an immediate impact as a rookie before injuries derailed the Cowboys' offense. Despite a drop-off in QB talent, Lamb was a trusted option in the offense and has a role that is less affected by personnel changes than other players. He is being drafted as a borderline WR1 in fantasy, and 2021 may be the last season in which Lamb is not the undisputed WR1 in Dallas.

DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. New York Giants
CeeDee Lamb showed off his upside in Week 16 when he posted a 3-65-1 receiving line and also ran a jet sweep in for a touchdown from 19 yards out. Lamb has maintained his explosive big-play ability without Dak Prescott but has seen more volatile usage than he got early in the season, meaning his consistency has faltered but his upside remains. Lamb and the Cowboys will take on the Giants in Week 17, and Lamb’s slot role means he will avoid James Bradberry in coverage. Lamb is an intriguing DFS option in Week 17 as he boasts one of the better matchups in the Cowboy passing game.

Week 16 vs. Philadelphia Eagles
CeeDee Lamb's 85 yards in Week 15 were his most since Dak Prescott got injured. Lamb still has yet to score a receiving touchdown since Week 11, which is indicative of how the offense as a whole has taken a step back with Andy Dalton under center. This week Lamb will face off primarily with Nickell Robey-Coleman, who has normally provided solid coverage in the slot but has struggled recently after moving to a new team. The circumstances suggest Lamb is a borderline WR3 this week, but his floor remains low without Prescott throwing him passes.

DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. San Francisco 49ers
CeeDee Lamb's production has been lacking for over a month now, with him reaching 50 yards receiving only once since Week 7. Lamb has essentially been a WR4 since Dak Prescott's injury. Now he will take on a 49ers secondary that is around the league average in allowing fantasy production to wide receivers. San Francisco's primary slot corner, K'Waun Williams, is coming off an ankle injury and looks questionable to play this week, which would benefit Lamb from a matchup standpoint. Even if he gets a matchup with a reserve corner, Lamb's inability to produce of late makes him a risky play in Week 15.

DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Cincinnati Bengals
Without Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb has been a volatile fantasy performer. Lamb is still seeing a decent amount of targets, but his efficiency has not been the same since Prescott's injury, resulting in him finishing as a starting-quality fantasy receiver in only three of seven games since Prescott got hurt. The Bengals are not a particularly troubling matchup for receivers, but they do have Mackensie Alexander, their best corner, man the slot where Lamb operates the majority of the time. Lamb will have the toughest matchup of any Dallas pass catcher in Week 14, but his target floor is enough to warrant considering the rookie as a flex play against Cincinnati.

Week 13 at Baltimore Ravens
CeeDee Lamb continues to see solid target volume, but he has struggled to convert targets into efficient production without Dak Prescott. Lamb has finished under 40 receiving yards in four out of the last five weeks, meaning he is dependent on touchdowns to be fantasy relevant in the current state of the Dallas offense. Now Lamb will travel to Baltimore to take on a Ravens defense that is among the toughest in the league for opposing receivers. Lamb has some upside as he gets a decent amount of looks in the Dallas passing game, but his efficiency struggles and the touch matchup make him a touchdown-dependent WR3 for Week 13.

DAL WR CeeDee Lamb - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Washington Football Team
Rookie CeeDee Lamb finished tied for second on the Cowboys in targets (6) in Week 11, only finishing behind Amari Cooper. Lamb only managed to catch four of his targets, but one reception was a beautiful touchdown where Lamb had to make a late adjustment and snatch a slightly overthrown ball out of the air. Lamb continues to command a solid target share (17.6%) despite fighting Cooper, Michael Gallup, Ezekiel Elliott, and Dalton Schultz for opportunity in Dallas. In Week 12, Lamb will have his introduction to the Cowboys' annual Thanksgiving matchup with Washington, a team that boasts a strong pass defense. Lamb and all other Cowboys will be somewhat risky plays in a tough matchup, but Lamb has shown enough as a rookie to warrant starting as a flex.
