ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Carolina Panthers

After catching only four of the 12 balls thrown his way in Week 1, Christian Kirk caught six of his eight targets last week against the Ravens for 114 yards. Kirk is second on the team with 20 targets and is clearly a major part of the Cardinals offense. His big-play ability gives him high upside each time he touches the ball, and his versatility in the passing game allows him to be featured in multiple offensive packages.

This week, Kirk will face a Panthers defense that has allowed the third-least passing yards through two games, and held Jared Goff pretty much in check during Week 1. They’ve been getting pressure on opposing passers, showing considerable improvement over last season. Kirk should still be featured in the offense, but temper your expectations in a below-average matchup. We have him ranked as a WR3 option this week.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Baltimore Ravens

Christian Kirk only had 32 yards on four catches last week against the Lions, but he was targeted 12 times and is clearly a major part of the offense. Kirk also caught a key two-point conversion that forced the game into overtime. While he’s likely to continue to get quality looks in this offense, giving him upside in any given week, it’s hard to trust him against a tough Baltimore defense heading into Week 2. The Ravens allowed the least yards per game of any team last year, and only the Bears allowed fewer points. Plus, Baltimore made the Dolphins look silly in Week 1. Kirk should be on your roster, but owners should look elsewhere for this matchup.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Detroit Lions

Christian Kirk showed some promise last year before a late-season injury ended his rookie campaign prematurely. Despite being in a terrible offense that threw the ball the fourth-least in the league, Kirk caught 43 balls for 590 yards and three touchdowns. While not eye-popping numbers, he flashed the immense talent he showed at Texas A&M before the Cardinals took him in the second round. With new head coach Kliff Kingsbury in town, Arizona is likely to pass more – efficiently or not.

Kirk starts his sophomore campaign against a Detroit Lions defense that allowed the 10th-least fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers last season. It’s a tough matchup to start the year, and while he has potential upside in the new offense, fantasy owners should look elsewhere if possible. We have him ranked as a low-end WR3 this week, with a wait-and-see approach being the advised path on Arizona pass-catchers in general.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
As CBSSports.com recently suggested, given Larry Fitzgerald's age (36 in August), there's an excellent chance Christian Kirk becomes the No. 1 receiver for the Cardinals in 2019. The versatile Kirk is an inside or outside receiver who produces yards after the catch, has great speed, boasts solid route-running skills and displays good hands. He proved to be dynamic (and productive) in his rookie campaign. This year, there's a new offense, run by a new offensive-minded head coach (Kliff Kingsbury) with a new QB (Kyler Murray). On the whole, this should be a much-improved offense that will be forced to throw the ball a lot because of game scripts. Indeed, that's probably the way Kingsbury wants to run his offense anyway. As Fansided.com's Avery Duncan put it, "[Kingsbury's] offense is about as aggressive as a ten-year-old playing 'Madden.'" Sounds like something fantasy owners can get behind.

Fantasy Downside
The Cardinals went all in at wide receiver, adding multiple players at the position in the draft and through free agency (including former Bears first-round pick Kevin White). It seems unlikely any of the newcomers will keep Kirk off the field, but there are going to be a lot of mouths to feed in this offense.

2019 Bottom Line
Murray is well-known for his time and success at Oklahoma, but the QB spent his freshman year at Texas A&M. Though he played just one season for the Aggies, Kirk and Murray were freshmen teammates, and Murray threw his first college touchdown pass to the now-Cardinal receiver. So, yes, Fitzgerald is still there, and the team added Andy Isabella and Hakeem Butler in April's draft (and of course David Johnson will chip in, too), but Kirk could return great value if drafted in his current range (just outside WR3 territory).

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Green Bay Packers

Christian Kirk had only 41 yards last week against the Chargers in a forgettable game for the Cardinals offense. However, he was targeted a team-high six times, catching four passes on the day. Kirk remains a playmaker with high upside in any given week. He just also has a low floor in a terrible offense. This week, Kirk has similar boom-bust potential against a reeling Packers team that is in desperate need of a win. In quick-strike formats with deep rosters, Kirk has some upside if the Cardinals need to throw all game, but he’s too risky to start in most leagues.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Los Angeles Chargers

Christian Kirk only caught three passes last week against the Raiders, but gained 77 yards and scored a touchdown in a bounce-back game against a vulnerable opponent. Kirk is far from a sure thing, but he’s a playmaker who has scored three touchdowns in his last six games and has built a nice rapport with rookie quarterback Josh Rosen.

This week, Kirk plays a Chargers a defense that has allowed the eighth-least fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers this year, making it tough for Kirk to repeat his performance form last week. In a tough matchup on a struggling offense, fantasy owners shouldn’t have Kirk active, and he remains a long-term keeper or dynasty player for the time being.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Oakland Raiders

Christian Kirk was disappointing against the Chiefs last week, catching only two of the six balls thrown his way for a measly eight yards. The impact of new offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich on the Arizona offense isn’t fully known at this point, but with David Johnson catching more passes, Kirk’s targets may suffer as a result. Even in a good matchup against the Raiders this week, a wait-and-see approach should be taken with Kirk as the team adjusts to a new play-caller. He’s a boom-bust option.
