ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Washington Football Team

Christian Kirk struggled in Week 1 against the 49ers, catching just one of the five balls thrown his way, for zero yards. He’s still a high-upside option long term, but it’s certainly not encouraging to see him gain nothing out of five targets. Kirk is probably a fringe roster player right now, and fantasy owners should leave him on the bench until he shows he can produce with DeAndre Hopkins now taking the bulk of the team’s targets.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at San Francisco 49ers

Christian Kirk had an up-and-down season last year, but wound up with a solid 709 yards on 68 receptions. His targets may decrease this year with the addition of DeAndre Hopkins, although he’s still likely to see starter snaps on the outside, with Larry Fitzgerald spending most of his time in the slot. Kirk is likely to be up-and-down again. This probably isn’t the week to start him though, as he was held to eight catches and just 49 total yards in two matchups against the 49ers last season. Sit him.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Cardinals receivers' room had a sea change when DeAndre Hopkins arrived. Its impact on Christian Kirk will be interesting to watch, after a self-described "frustrating" 2019 season in which he battled ankle issues nearly all season. But Kirk said despite playing in pain he still made progress, and he is anxious to see himself within an offense loaded with promise behind quarterback Kyler Murray. "It'll be a little bit of pick your poison," Kirk said. "It's going to be fun."

Fantasy Downside
Sure, but will Kirk be among those having the fun? With Hopkins now around and Larry Fitzgerald coming back for another season, ESPN's Matthew Berry worries about Kirk getting enough looks. Hopkins was second in target share (28.8 percent), third in receptions per game and fourth in targets per game last season. The Cardinals didn't land him to play a complementary role. Meanwhile, Kirk had five games last season with fewer than seven targets. In those games, he had zero touchdowns and averaged merely 5.6 fantasy points per game and just over 20 yards per game.

2020 Bottom Line
FantasyPros pointed out that over the last 10 NFL seasons, of the 338 wide receivers who've seen at least 100 targets, 291 of them were able to finish as top-36 fantasy options. That's an 86.1 percent success rate. Those who failed to do that in 2019: Dede Westbrook; Kirk; and Fitzgerald. Don't overpay.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Los Angeles Rams

Christian Kirk failed to catch any of the five balls thrown his way last week against the Seahawks. He managed to gain nine yards on two rushes, but that was hardly good news for fantasy owners who lost championships because of him. He’s been largely ineffective for much of the season and continues to carry high risk-reward potential in any given game.

The Rams rank 11th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers this year and they held Kirk to just 23 yards on three receptions the last time these two teams met. His lack of production for much of the season combined with a difficult matchup and a likely game script that should favor the run game make Kirk too risky to trust in most leagues. He has some deep-league WR3 upside but coming off a bad week and now six games removed from his last really good fantasy outing, it’s safe to bench him if you have a more consistent option available.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Seattle Seahawks

Christian Kirk had just 33 yards on four catches last week. Kirk has been active in the passing game all season, but has not been particularly productive. Outside of his huge game against the Buccaneers, he has zero touchdowns and only one 100-yard receiving game this season. That being said, he’s averaging 8.4 targets per game, giving him upside, particularly in PPR formats.

This week, Kirk faces a Seahawks defense that has been vulnerable to opposing pass-catchers this season. They are tied for 18th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers and just allowed eight catches and 113 yards to D.J. Moore last week. Kirk has risk associated with him, but he should be just safe enough to warrant high-end WR3 consideration.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Cleveland Browns

Christian Kirk didn’t light the world on fire last week, but he had a solid day, catching eight of the nine balls thrown his way for 85 yards. Kirk has faced some stiff competition as of late, but he tore up the last easy opponent he was up against – three touchdowns and 138 yards against the Buccaneers on November 10th. Kirk is the primary receiver in Arizona, so any uptick in offensive production should benefit him.

The Browns rank 13th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers this season, so it’s not a super easy matchup for Kirk. Still, the Cardinals should be able to rebound a bit offensively after three tough matchups. The Browns are without key starters on defense, most notably star pass rusher Myles Garrett, which should bode well for the passing game. Start Kirk as a solid WR3 option with upside.

ARI WR Christian Kirk - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Christian Kirk has been quiet the past two weeks after his huge game against the Bucs where he scored three touchdowns. He has only 64 receiving yards and no touchdowns in his last two games, despite 16 targets. Kirk’s targets give him upside, but if you remove the Bucs game from consideration, he’s averaging just 5.4 catches and 49 yards per game with zero touchdowns.

The Steelers rank 11th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers, so this isn’t a great matchup for Kirk. While he does have potential and should continue to rack up targets, his lack of consistent production makes him difficult to count on. Fantasy owners should view him as a fringe WR3 option, with a little added bonus in PPR formats due to his high floor for catches.
