KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Cleveland Browns

Clyde Edwards-Helaire has the backfield mostly to himself this year after the departure of Le'Veon Bell. While Bell didn't do a whole lot, he did enough to tank CEH's stock a bit. We like CEH to improve in his sophomore season, primarily as a receiver. CEH had decent receiving stats before Bell's arrival, but then finished with 20 yards receiving or less in six of the seven games with Bell active. CEH gets a decent Week 1 matchup against the Browns and should be viewed as a borderline RB1 play.

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a strong rookie season, finishing with 1,100 scrimmage yards despite missing three games. We’re expecting bigger numbers for CEH in 2021, especially with Le’Veon Bell gone. While Bell didn’t do much himself, he did seem to hinder CEH as the rookie was the No. 11 running back through six weeks before the Chiefs added Bell. But Bell is gone, and no one of note replaced him on the depth chart. CEH is a talented player in a high-powered offense who has already shown he can be productive.

Fantasy Downside
CEH’s biggest problem as a rookie was his lack of scoring, finishing with five total touchdowns. Another downside was the fact CEH only finished with 2.8 receptions per game. That’s a low figure for a back in a high-powered offense with Patrick Mahomes throwing the ball. CEH also had, including the playoffs, seven games with 10 rushing attempts or less. That’s nearly half of the 15 games he played in.

2021 Bottom Line
With Bell gone, and not a lot of depth behind him, we’d expect CEH to get back to the pace he had during the first six weeks of his rookie season. If his touches can improve, and be consistent, there’s no reason why CEH can’t put up bigger numbers in 2021. The Chiefs also revamped their offensive line, which should make things easier for CEH. We like him as a strong RB2 heading into this season, placing him around the RB15 mark (half-PPR).

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at New Orleans Saints

Clyde Edwards-Helaire saw 21 touches last week, the first time he's topped 20 touches in a game since Week 6 (for reference, CEH averaged 20+ touches through the first six games of the season). CEH struggled on the ground, but the Chiefs got him involved as a receiver as he finished with his most receptions (5) and his most receiving yards (59) since Week 3. It'd be nice if this volume continues, but we don't expect it to. Even if it does, CEH draws a brutal matchup against the Saints this week. New Orleans has allowed the third-fewest rushing yards and third-fewest receiving yards to running backs this season. CEH is a low-end RB2 or a strong flex play in Week 15.

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Miami Dolphins

Clyde Edwards-Helaire drew the ire of fantasy owners everywhere last week when he was ruled active, but did nothing all game and finished with a fat zero points. CEH was dealing with an illness, so he should be fine for Week 14. He's still listed on the injury report, but he got in a full practice session. CEH has had an odd season with really big highs (169 yards), and really down lows (31 yards). He gets a somewhat tough matchup against the Dolphins (No. 13 aFPA) this week, but we're more worried about his touches than the matchup itself. The Chiefs have gone pass-happy lately, and those passes aren't affecting CEH (two total receptions in his last two played games). CEH should be viewed more as an RB2 play in Week 14 against the Dolphins.

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Denver Broncos

Clyde Edwards-Helaire saw double-digit carries again last week, but wasn't quite as productive as he finished with 37 yards. He added just two more yards on one reception (one target) as a receiver. Even though Le'Veon Bell hasn't been terribly productive, there's a noticeable drop off in production from CEH the moment Bell arrived. His averages have dropped from 21.3 touches to 10.6, his yards from 113.7 to 48.8, and his fantasy points (PPR) from 15.85 to 11.48. The interesting part is CEH's drop from 4.2 receptions in the five games before Bell to 1.8 in the five games after Bell. The Chiefs have been throwing the ball often, but neither CEH nor Bell have made a strong impact out of the backfield. As for this week, CEH faces a fairly favorable matchup (No. 22 aFPA) against the Broncos. He finished with 63 scrimmage yards (nine touches) and a touchdown in his last meeting against Denver. CEH is a low-end RB2 or a strong flex play in Week 13.

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Chiefs finally returned to utilizing Clyde Edwards-Helaire in their offense, as he saw his first game with double-digit touches since Le'Veon Bell arrived. CEH ran 14 times for a nice 69 yards and two touchdowns while adding one catch for eight yards (two targets). While the touches haven't always been there since Bell's arrival, CEH has still scored a touchdown in 3/4 games with Bell. This week, CEH gets a brutal matchup against the Bucs who have allowed the fewest total rushing yards to running backs this season. Backs are averaging only 50 rushing yards against the Bucs this season. The good news, though, is the Bucs have allowed the eighth-most receiving yards to backs this season. So if the Chiefs get CEH involved as a receiver, he should be fine. We like CEH as a strong RB2 play this week against the Bucs (No. 4 aFPA).

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 at Las Vegas Raiders

In the game before Le'Veon Bell's arrival, Clyde Edwards-Helaire had 30 total touches. In the three games since, he's had a combined 26 touches. Part of that is Bell being involved, and part is simply game flow. Still, it's not promising for CEH owners to see such a dramatic dropoff in usage. CEH was an easy RB1 play before Bell arrived, seeing an average of 17.8 carries per game (with at least 10 carries in each game). Since Bell arrived, CEH has had single-digit carries each week. It could be more of the same this week against the Raiders. When the Chiefs played the Raiders last, CEH saw a pre-Bell season-low of 13 touches as Patrick Mahomes threw 43 times. With Bell's arrival, it wouldn't be surprising to see another low-touch game for CEH. The good news is this is a favorable matchup, and the Raiders have allowed the fourth-most receiving yards to running backs this season. CEH should be a strong RB2 play in Week 11.
