Scouting report

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Green Bay Packers

Cole Kmet had his best game with Justin Fields under center last week, but only finished 2-22 on four targets. The Bears did get a touchdown to a tight end last week, but it went to Jesper Horsted of all people. Kmet has a 4-39 combined stat line in the three starts with Justin Fields. That's not even that good of a per-game average let alone a combined number through three starts. Kmet should mostly be off the fantasy radar in Week 6.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Las Vegas Raiders

Cole Kmet finished his third straight game with just one reception. He has a total of 17 yards in those games, all of which have been mostly quarterbacked by Justin Fields (Fields played the majority of the first game, and started the next two). Kmet had some sleeper potential heading into the year, but the production just isn't there to recommend playing him in fantasy. It's a great matchup against a Raiders team that's allowed the fifth-most receiving yards to tight ends, but three receptions in three games are hard to ignore.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Detroit Lions

Cole Kmet finished his second game in a row with just reception, this time for 11 yards. Although the low production is the result of the Bears stinking on offense as a whole, not necessarily anything involving Kmet. After a strong Week 1 with Andy Dalton, Kmet's production has plummeted with Justin Fields at quarterback. We can't really recommend him as a good play this week, which is why we have him ranked outside of our top 20 tight ends. Although it is a good matchup against a Lions defense that's allowed the third-most receiving yards to TEs so far this season.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Cleveland Browns

After a decent Week 1, Cole Kmet had a letdown of a Week 2 as he finished with one target which ended up as a catch for no yards. He technically had two targets, but one got called back due to a penalty. Both of his looks were from Justin Fields, who starts this week for the Bears, but it's not a good sign to see Kmet 72% of the offensive snaps and finish with no yards. He should finish with more than just a single catch this week, but he's outside of our top 15 tight ends for the week. Although he does face a favorable Browns defense that's allowed two touchdowns to TEs so far this season.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Cole Kmet had a strong Week 1, finishing 5-42 on seven targets. His 42 receiving yards are the second-most he's had in a game in his career. This game also proves for sure that Chicago has moved on with Kmet over Jimmy Graham. It was trending that way at the end of last year, but the snap counts really paint the picture. Kmet played 74% of the offensive snaps while Graham played just 20% (or 14 total snaps). He gets a solid matchup against the Bengals this week, and he should be viewed in low-TE1 territory for Week 2.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Los Angeles Rams

Cole Kmet is listed as the Bears' starter over Jimmy Graham, but we'd expect both players to be involved in the offense. Kmet showed some promise at the end of last season, but it's hard to fully trust him at the start of 2021. He's still a player who hasn't reached 50 yards in a game, and he's only finished with at least three receptions three times in his career. We're projecting him to finish outside of the top 20 tight ends in Week 1, making him a pretty poor play at the position.

CHI TE Cole Kmet - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Cole Kmet started to get more involved as a rookie late in the season last year, playing in at least 70% of the offensive snaps in the final seven games of the season (he played just 34% of the offensive snaps in the first nine games). In that span, he averaged 5.1 targets per game, which extrapolated over a full season this year would be 86.7.

Fantasy Downside
Kmet saw just seven red-zone targets all season as a rookie, catching three passes, two of which were touchdowns. Meanwhile, Jimmy Graham saw 22 red-zone targets, which were seventh highest in the league. Graham finished with eight touchdowns. The veteran is returning this season, and while he wasn’t terribly productive (averaging less than 30 yards per game), he did vulture Kmet’s scoring opportunities, which we could see happening again in 2021. The Bears also signed Jesse James, who likely won't have a huge impact, but makes things just that much more complicated.

2021 Bottom Line
Kmet should definitely improve from the 15 yards per game he had as a rookie, but his ceiling will be limited as long as Graham is around. Even Allen Robinson will cause issues considering the wide receiver saw 23 red-zone targets, tied for fourth-most in the league. We have Kmet outside of the top 20 tight ends, which makes him waiver material in most leagues. He has breakout potential, but until we actually see it happen he’s not worth much.
